    Pros

Large respected biotech company with an incredible history of success and innovation. Good opportunity for experience with limitations. You can learn how a biotech company works as well as how not to run a company. You can learn a great deal here but mostly you will learn what not to do when you start up your own company. Probably good for someone early in their career just wanting to put a biotech notch on their plate.

    Cons

Lost innovative spirit due to CEOs desire for Wall street gains. Poor insight. Financially unsteady. Likely to split or get bought out in 2 years. Rigid glass ceiling. Old paradigms of thought that are oddly unbalanced with an arrogance of belief in historical reputation and complacency. All the good people are gone or leaving. If you are a physician and want to be treated like a grad student or intern, this is the place for you. If you like fulfilling tasks and checklists without thinking, this is the place for you. If you are innovative and creative, bottle up your mind and stop thinking if you want to work here. This company is all about processes and talking with little action. It takes 18-36 months to make a decision - a poor sign of current leadership and management and a reflection of Amgen's expected demise. It does not move or think fast enough for the highly intelligent. If you simply want to work like a dog at your supervisor's beck and call and expectations, by all means feel free to apply.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-evaluate your CEO, CFO, COO and Chief Medical Officers. Hire professionals with backbones that care about innovation and risk without catering to Wall Street all the time. Stop providing generous financial packages to your top leaders and maybe you will get someone who is willing to make decisions irrespective of Wall Street bean-counting demands. It's very simple. Listen to your people, not your pocketbook. Greed is is not working at Amgen. How can a company complain about financial health when the CEO is over-paid? I am sure a few million less to your leadership will go a long way towards some interesting business case development.

    Pros

Great total compensation package, terrific benefits, onsite day care, lots of career growth opportunities, some very talented employees, philanthropic organization

    Cons

Recent reduction in force handled quite poorly, from employee termination and work transition standpoints. Lots of stories of unprofessional forced exits, and critical business processes and systems seemingly abandoned because of the departure of key talent with no knowledge transfer. Remaining staff are ridiculously overworked and stressed. Despite company mission to serve patients, the company clearly has grown to a size where it is financially, rather than scientifically, driven.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actively solicit and use full 360 feedback in assessing managerial competence. Too many cases of weak, low performing middle managers being supported by real talent. Don't be penny-wise and pound-foolish in terms of firing more expensive, high performing staff with years of direct experience and replacing them with cheaper, less experienced newcomers. Don't performance and loyalty count anymore?

    Pros

Benefits, pay, culture, professionalism. Some of the best time off of any company in the biotechnology industry.

    Cons

Unstable environment at the present. Probability of moving most manufacturing operations overseas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The bottom line is not the only thing that makes a company great. People are the lifeblood.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Amgen is a high science biotechnology company with outstanding marketed products and a robust pipeline.

    Cons

As all companies grow larger, there are challenges with bureaucracy and decision-making processes. The optics of all decisions are viewed through too many lenses. It appears that stock price became more important than talent retention. The current restructuring has resulted in the exodus of great talent and expertise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It may be wise to hedge your future success on talent and expertise rather than restructuring and reducing the work-force in an effort to increase stock price

    Pros

    - Amazing place to learn business
    - Outstanding values and culture
    - Good opportunities and encouraging management

    Cons

Change is in the air and management doesn't hold much control over it. Stagnancy can seep in real soon if individual doesn't take charge of his/her own career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
