I worked at Amgen as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Nice campus. Food options for lunch are great. .

    Cons

The workload can get overwhelming when there is lack of management or guidance. Huge discrepancy between treatment of full time staff and contract workers. 30% of employees laid off between now through 2016, while the CEO, VP and execs rake in millions of dollars a year in bonuses and stocks. No job stability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure new staff gets the proper training that is needed. Maybe if execs weren't so hung up on raking in millions in bonuses, thousands of people would still have jobs. Replacing full time staff for contract workers will save the company money, but work morale, company reputation and work attitude is on a steep downhill.

I worked at Amgen full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The salaries are higher than anywhere else, for similar titles.

    Cons

    Where do I start...
    >>> 70 hours work weeks are REQUIRED
    >>> An unsustainable business model, with 30% of the workforce being contingent workers (temps)
    >>> Absolutely chaotic environment
    >>> No senior leadership support for improving processes, CONTRARY to what they will tell you during the interview process!!!!!!!!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Amgen as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

    Campus & Cafeteria and Benefits...

    Cons

Communication is awful, no loyalty. They keep temp employees very long so they don't pay them benefits... Lay-offs left and right. They hire contractors/temps all the time so they don't have to pay benefits...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change your HR departments and they way they operate... Not very honest in telling you what is going on...
The treatment of employees is horrible! Take a look at your contractors/temps.

    Pros

The Thousand Oaks campus is beautiful.

    Cons

Work-life balance is very difficult to achieve. They have succession plans, but I never saw someone agreed on as a successor get the job when the incumbent left. Management typically goes outside for senior people rather than develop from within. The company is currently being dismantled. Look for work in other cities that have more options.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your planned cuts quickly and make sure all the 2nd mortgages people took to move to the area are forgiven in total. No one in TO is going to be able to sell their house now that you're cutting back anyway.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent pay and benefits and awards of Bonus and stocks every year.

    Cons

High stress environment where competition is overtly promoted and the company will lay-off/RIF staff to increase profit. Company actively moving production overseas to avoid taxes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop moving operations overseas and invest more in American operations and staff.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of paid holidays, vacation days, and a great 401k

    Cons

Management consists of young MBA types that are afraid of saying anything but yes. Through layoff after layoff, more work gets piled on and more useless contractors come on board.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit and bring back the old management. Oh, and dig up your old copy of the Amgen values.
