Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Thousand Oaks, CA

ProsExcellent ethic and mission. Consumer orientation and product safety is top-notch.

ConsPoor job security. Considerable turnover and frequent downsizing.

Advice to Senior ManagementLike many large corporate entities, planning is too short term and cash driven.

    Tough as a contractor

Bureaucracy and politics should be in the mission statement

Senior Manager (Current Employee) Thousand Oaks, CA

    ProsPay and benefits are excellent
    Having Amgen on your resume
Thousand Oaks is a nice town
Lots of job openings, and can move around

ConsBloated with too many middle managers, executive directors and directors.
Everyone passes the buck and not many try to simply get the job done.
Everyone spends way too much time putting together slide decks and going to meetings.
Thousand Oaks is a boring town.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry going more toward a matrix structure, and eliminating middle managers. Big pharma companies are much less bureaucratic than Amgen. Your scientific brilliance and excellence are drowning in slide decks, meetings, and favoritism.

    Science-based, patient focused company

Clinical Development (Current Employee) Thousand Oaks, CA

ProsYou get to work with very smart people, there is great science being done, the pipeline is fantastic. Amgen offers great benefits in terms of vacation time and 401K matching

ConsThere can be lots of politics, and often getting a decision is challenging. For non-MDs, there are limited growth opportunites

Great place to build a career.

Project Manager (Current Employee) Thousand Oaks, CA

Prosgood people, good experience, professional place to work. Amgen's known for their generous bonuses and European-style paid time off, matching 401k, and awesome gym.

Consthe benefits make it hard to leave. they're known as the "golden handcuffs." thousand oaks is a miserable town to live in, unless you are ready to have your white picket fence and 2.5 kids. then it's a great town to live in.

Advice to Senior Managementas we grow, we must expand our resources. if resources are constrained, so will growth.

    POC

POC (Current Employee) Thousand Oaks, CA

ProsAmgen is finally moving(slowly be it) with industries standards.

ConsWorkload, work–life balance and senior management's reluctance to identify burnout! It is not uncommon for an entire group to be working on a sunday.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop sitting around pontificating, instead get out of your ivory tower to network with other big pharma/biotech colleagues. Processes should be implemented to work smarter not harder.

The DNA of AMGEN is unraveling

Sales Representative (Current Employee) Thousand Oaks, CA

ProsTwo weeks of paid shutdown per year. Good benefits. Once you've worked here, you are a desired talent at most biotech firms.

ConsExcessive metrics of every function (analysis paralysis) no longer a nimble organization. Uninspiring management, filled with good old boy politics, promotion of incompetent or mis-casts proteges. Promotions based on who you know, not talent. So many really talented, sharp people have made a mass exodus from the organization due to the politics, poor leadership and inability to move their career forward. The DNA of the company and what it once had as value in the talent pool has evaporated. Most of field sales force are new or less than three years tenure. You'll find a lot of people "hanging on" to keep benefits and retirement options or people that came over for the Amgen they heard of but no longer exist.

Advice to Senior ManagementShake up the dead weight and eliminate lifetime positions. Rotate some of the rotten wood out and infuse life into leadership. Most importantly, evaluate the appropriateness of a middle management candidate instead of pushing them out to check the box.

Declining company in a declining culture

Senior Scientist (Former Employee) Thousand Oaks, CA

ProsGood pay, good benefits, good working conditions, nice campus

Consmanagement, politics, decision making process, promotion, attitude towards people, arrogance, self-centered, ignorance, self-absorbed, exclusiveness, "I am not responsible,"

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to say "NO" but thats impossible because you will be out, so it is possible but you need to understand that sooner or later you will be out and when you are Okay with that, then it is worthwhile to say "NO," it will make one stronger in the long run.

Great at first, not so good later

Business Analyst (Former Employee) Thousand Oaks, CA

ProsGreat salary and benefits. A few opportunities if you are political

ConsMany people get stuck & there is little opportunity for promotion. Very few good managers

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop the people you have- and train supervisors

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
