    A lot of hype

I worked at Amgen as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Company name and product deliverables

    Cons

All the glam and benefits are only for full time employees. They treat contract/temps as second class citizens despite professional experience. Company intranet sites are blocked so they can't view full time employee perks.

I worked at Amgen full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Amgen provides an excellent compensation and benefits package, the working environment is excellent in general with some notable exceptions, and the company provides extensive employee development training opportunities. The Amgen campus is ideally located in Thousand Oaks, which has great weather, excellent schools, and a safe environment.

    Cons

Career path opportunities are limited and advancement is often driven by politics. Numerous inefficiencies and multiple layers of bureaucracy are prevalent; management decisions are often arbitrary. Far too many unproductive meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A career path with opportunities for advancement, particularly for R&D needs to be in place. Reduce the heavy middle management positions and develop a fair and equitable system for promotions that reduces the politics.

I worked at Amgen full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The campus in Thousand Oaks is without question, beautiful and the area a great place to live. The overall benefits are what you would expect from a large corporate employer with added on campus perks. There was a time when Amgen attracted talented people and many are still there, so one is mostly surrounded by smart folks.

    Cons

The culture is intense, and that is no understatement. The hierarchy is like no other within the industry, very much a top down organization focused on the bottom line.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -2 shutdowns each year

    -Pay is good

    Cons

-Amgen had an safety incident this year which has led to a "safety culture" that is completely unreasonable. Women are forced to wear pants. Reports are filed if someone is walking down steps in high heels. Employees are treated like children, not highly trained and qualified staff.

-With the ascent of Bob Bradway, Amgen is now cutting corners and cutting costs anywhere and everywhere, from the cafeterias to the number of steps it takes to move a molecule to the clinic. Bob's methods will no doubt boost EPS temporarily but long term it will hurt the company tremendously.

-People are forced to spend a significant amount of time in worthless trainings and pointless, repetitive meetings.

-Management has been threatening layoffs for an entire year. Productivity has plummeted and people are becoming despondent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adjust the salaries of the employees who have been at Amgen for 20 years and are making salaries that are 2X what they should be. Trust your employees. Don't cut R&D.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Outstanding benefits, very good compensation, plenty of time off, extremely generous 401k package, very generous bonus plan. Good emphasis on personal scientific growth. Get a week off at Christmas as well as a week off during 4th of July in addition to 15 vacation days. Great campus and great weather year round.

    Cons

Not many levels within group, so it's difficult to get promoted. Can spend many years at the same level with no promotion reward. Politics within R&D at the very top that trickle down to group. Decisions are made at the top that don't always make much sense with respect to the way each group does things, but must live with decision and must implement it. Like any company, big emphasis on the dollar value which can put constraints on the way one does research.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Believe wholeheartedly in what R&D is trying to accomplish

I worked at Amgen as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Summer internship was an excellent opportunity to explore the pharmaceutical industry. We were each assigned summer projects which we presented upon the end of our 3 months. This paid internship also includes summer housing, car rental, gym membership, and fun extracurricular events (surfing, baseball games, kayaking, etc.). Many opportunities to network with executive level employees . Excellent Executive (C-Level) Speaker Series.

    Cons

None. After completing the summer internship program, many interns were presented with full-time offers.
