I have been working at Amscan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked IT for a number of years in the business sector of the Burlington area of Massachusetts. Am Source is a small company that is expanding. It has a healthy benefit package for the full time employees. They offer training, bonuses and plenty of overtime. It's a nice clean environment that is safety conscious.

    Cons

High turn over rate in production. Company is also going through a growth curve that rocks the boat continuously, par for the course in my opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do more to retain the menial tasked workers. They need more incentive to remain in that position. The burden gets laid on the full timers that are hooked in.

I worked at Amscan full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

once you are finally hired full time, they have an excellent wellness program and fitness program

    Cons

Extremely poor management, they can't keep up with the workload, which trickles down to the layout artists. They talk behind your back and blame the layout artists for everything, even though THEY are the ones who sign off the work to print.

zero room for growth, unless you stay for 12+ years and take open positions from retirees

    Pros

The wellness program. Personal gym, fitness And cooking classes. Medical benefits. Some friendly people, other than that nothing. There's not that many pros at this company.

    Cons

The management. Designers are treated poorly and constantly belittled. If you work here you will not move up at this company. They expect you to work late with a low salary, empty promises of progression and raises. Only work for this company for no longer than a year to have the experience on you resume. Not a creative environment at all!

    Pros

Convenient Location. Straight forward and simple work. Wellness program and benefits (except the paycheck) are outstanding.

    Cons

Pay is not great. I'm not sure if there is one good manager in the entire building. The company promotes people purely by staying power alone. It doesn't matter how incompetent or unorganized you are anyone can be a manager if they stick it out for 12-15 years with the company. Unless you are staying late and coming in on Saturdays (which is hard when you actually have a life) you will not be recognized even if you get all you work done well. On top of the constant pressure to put in extra time and meet their unrealistic deadlines the layout artists get blamed for every single mistake regardless of who is actually to blame.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with some dignity and respect. Understand that they are people who also have lives outside of the workplace.

    Pros

People are great to work with. This company is a growing and a great stepping stone into the working world. Great fitness program available to all employees daily.

    Cons

Salary is very low. Things are pretty unorganized. There aren't enough manpower to work on the massive amounts of workload given.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and hear out some of the concerns that needs to be addressed.

I worked at Amscan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, small gym, free wellness and exercise classes, decent benefits, credit union, retirement plans, profit sharing.

    Cons

Don't plant your roots here if you commute. Business is ever changing, somewhat growing, but also in negative ways, not all positive. For example, due to antiquated rules, management is not flexible with people that have children and families with long commutes, even if you are salaried! They expect you to work late, weekends and extra, but when you need time off to go to doctors, grab the kids from school, etc. they make you use your own personal, sick or vacation time, rather than your accrued comp time. Also, the handbook (also quite antiquated) says you are allowed to leave early or arrive late due to inclement weather and make up the time, but now they make you use your PTO again. The handbook serves as rules when it suits management, and only 'guidelines' when the content suits you. Base salaries are also low, the average layout artist earns on the low median annually and if you're lucky enough to be considered as a graphic designer, you won't make much more - but you might get to be creative. Turnover is horrendous and like a revolving door. It doesn't take long for new hires to realize what they are in to and get out. There is way took many corporate rules and red tape to contend with for a career, use it for quick cash if you live close by.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on thr biger picture and not the minute details. Pay employees what they deserve, be more flexible with hours and commutes and allow more than deny, the work will still get done.
