Pros
Our design team was tight and focused. Everyone, from mid-management to individual contributors pulled their own weight and helped each other.
Cons
Management at upper levels not very forthcoming with focus and direction of design team. As a result, our efforts at times felt obstructed or without a clear goal. Bad for morale.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more open and transparent to the teams that remain in the company.
Pros
There are good engineers especially in product and test development. They really know how to bring products to market. Work time is very flexible and work at home is possible. Their benefits package is equal to or better than most equivalent companies.
Cons
If you are an offsite location, i.e., not in Norwood or Wilmington, MA, your career advancement is very limited. Most of the engineers I've seen work for 5, 6, 7 years without any promotion. If you are not connected or have some face time with senior management, you are anonymous, just another cog in the wheel. It also helps if you have some analog expertise. That's why the company is called Analog Devices.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more honest. Trying to sugar coat quarterly communications doesn't help the troops.
Pros
Excellent work life balance. Values technical skills above management skills. Can be good environment for very technical people.
Cons
Digital design flow is about 20 years behind state of the art. They are canceling DSP projects and shutting down design centers left and right. Focus is on analog development/MEMS. Very political environment that is poorly managed. Experience is valuedmore than innovation. Young engineers have difficulty earning respect and being heard. With 12 years of experience, I was referred to as a "kid".
Advice to Senior Management
Needs to be less conservative and develop a clear vision for success. Be a leader, not a follower
Pros
It's a stable company with a wide range of technology available to work with/on.
Cons
Management seems to have no particular strategy or focus and is extremely risk averse. Resources are spread very thin. ADI has a large basket of technology, but never integrates any of it together to target specific markets or applications so rarely survives after the first generation of a product or application when a customer is trying to cost down something in a high volume market.
Advice to Senior Management
Pick some key focuses for the business and stick with them. Take some risks.
