    Pros

Great teachers and staff who really care about kids.

    Cons

Low salary and limited budgets. Run on a shoestring. Not the fault of educators so much as it is the political climate. Kids deserve a world class education but county does not want to pay for it. The people who work in the schools do an incredible job because they care. They do it not for money but because it is important. Aacps teachers are paid less than most counties in MD.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get county politicians to grant a realistic budget.

    Pros

    - schedule (hours, summers off)
    - you get to see the results of your work right away
    - great place to learn IT on the job

    Cons

    - pay (10mo vs 12mo employees)
    - pay scale based on tenure not performance
    - no room for growth, formal training, or advancement
    - who you schmooze is more important that what is right or wrong

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Run the school system and it's BOE departments like a BUSINESS not a fraternity/sorority house popularity contest.

    Pros

My school is a nice school with relatively nice kids

    Cons

Salary.....County has lied to teacher (and no we are not unionized) about raises for years.

    Pros

Great teachers, so-so professional development (lots of presenters are "friends" of the administrators), mostly great kids. Colleagues are doing the best they can under mountains of data collection, self-serving ladder-climbers, and biased criticisms designed to oust tenured teachers so their cheap replacements will be the easier targets for lower pay, benefits, and morale. There are a few (and getting fewer) schools that are bastions of high student achievement and competent administrators, but there is no room for the vast majority of teachers who would transfer there if they could.

    Cons

Pay sucks, union (TAAAC) has no credibility, administrators are all about data and getting rid of experienced teachers so they can hire new candidates with no tenure. Teachers have no incentive to stay in impoverished and/or low achieving schools since the blame will be placed squarely on them (and never the students) for low test scores and classroom misbehavior.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become professionals, stop being bitchy children just looking for the next raise.

    Pros

Diverse community, interesting and dedicated co-workers

    Cons

The school I worked at had a lot of on-going issues with administration, some of which are still going through the legal process.
Issues with administration led to unfair treatment of employees and ability for students to get away with a lot of bad behavior.
The school was extremely outdated. Administration pushed teachers to use technology, but there were barely enough outlets in the room to plug in a computer, pencil sharpener and a projector. Technology provided in computer labs and teachers' desktop computers were very outdated.
There seemed to be a lot of "ganging up" by administrators and district-level program supervisors when problems arose with particular teachers. (I did not experience this personally, but saw issues arising around fellow teachers that seemed unjust.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe the administration has had a complete turnover since my time there, which is probably for the better. There were some very dedicated teachers who were undervalued and mistreated by the administration. I found that to be very unfortunate, as this particular school environment was not the easiest place to teach in the first place.
