Apollo Group - University of Phoenix

    Technical Support (Former Employee)
    Phoenix, AZ

ProsOrganized help desk support and training is useful.

ConsThe company employee policies and management are not as helpful for use and are in a constant state of revision as well as other processes. Sick time policy supports constant attrition and turn over and is likely a business practice tool.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange your sick time policies and stick with one that doesn't support constant attrition.

Overall good company, lots of opportunity for career growth over my years of employment.

    Admissions Representative (Former Employee)
    Phoenix, AZ

ProsExcellent benefit package, salary, education benefit for you and your family, locations nationally and online-home office potential.

ConsManagement was promoted based on numbers. Nepotism, and unethical practices were but a few of the issues they faced in the late 2009 in the for profit higher education crisis. Many growing pains, employees fearful of lay offs, constant change as they are driven by profit.

Great place to work, if they had their stuff together.

    Campus Technologist (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

Prosgreat people, staff always there to help each other.

Consconstant restructuring and the 'little' people lose their jobs, while the CEO sits making $26.5 million a year. They claim cutbacks, reduced spending, etc. Then remove the CEO's salary, or, put a cap on it, because employees do not deserve to lose their homes, vehicles repossessed, etc due to losing the jobs here, while the executives live basically free, and for what...because they can look pretty and make colorful PowerPoint slides??

Advice to Senior Managementlose the ego's, get realistic, and maybe you all need to suffer the same way your decisions make others.

The current CIO is outsourcing IT jobs

    Network Administrator II (Current Employee)
    Phoenix, AZ

ProsThe good thing is that job pay is good at this company. There are chances for advancement, if you're in the right department. Vacation days also advance quickly.

ConsThe worst thing about this company is that the current CIO is outsourcing IT jobs to India! And the CIO did not bother to find out the full capability of each IT department before pushing them to outsource. This is clearly a decision made without regard to in-house customer desires. If your job is aligned with the education part of this company, I think you are alright. But if you are in the IT department, look out!

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize that American jobs are more than just dollars on the bottom line. American jobs make our country strong and instill pride and honor in the communities in which we live. Don't sell out America!

Hemorrhaging money and sinking fast like all for-profit schools today.

    Software Engineer II (Current Employee)
    Phoenix, AZ

ProsTo be fair they have an onsite cafeteria, good parking, security on-site and nice campus. You can get hired here very easy with little to no experience. Some of the people you will work with are nice and supportive. Students are treated very nicely by most employees unlike the state universities that are guaranteed funding and for this reason degrade everyone that walks through the door.

ConsThere are a lot of people who don't understand the definition of humility and that think they have all the answers, and they don't. The managers for the most part are losing sleep trying figure out how they will make their teams look productive and successful so they themselves can keep their jobs. It's sad because this company could have been a great place to work while providing a great service to the working public looking to get an education. They are bent on making traditional schools like the local universities look like slow moving bloated giants that only cater to those who live with their parents and can therefore got to school in the day and not have to work to support a family. Unfortunately, they have become that bloated giant that they are trying to fight. An education from here is not and never will be as good the universities they are trying to be better than. The employees are tired and over-worked due to lay-offs happening all the time and the metrics increasing constantly.

Advice to Senior ManagementFloor level management is incompetent and lacks the understanding of true leadership and what it takes to reach success. Then again, you can't succeed in and environment where upper management has ruined what could of been a great company because of the need to fatten the pockets of the share holders more-and-more every quarter. That has become the main goal and for this reason you have lost site of your mission. Time to throw in the towel because the company has over expanded and there is no saving this sinking ship. Go back to your goal of providing the education that traditional schools can't and refuse to provide you just might start to turn things around.

    Outsourced!

    Systems Analyst (Former Employee)
    Phoenix, AZ

ProsWork is very challenging and opportunity for growth, there are very talented employees. Most employees work well together.

ConsIt is very siloed and some employers receive preferential treatment. Collaboration is a challenge and issues get passed around way too much.

Advice to Senior ManagementChoose a workable business solution and stick to it.

Good Company as a first employer!

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsHR still reinventing itself, so a good time to work for the company as it transitions. Very strong culture, good comfortable environment. Great managers and hiring managers to deal with. Good relationships with vendors.

ConsSome roles are pretty confusing and it feels the departments are kind of unorganized. Managers try to promote people they have previously worked with without focusing on their strengths or weaknesses. If you know someone in the company you'll be promoted.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease be little more open in communication to your employees.
