Engineer's nightmare aka lack of focus

I have been working at Appcelerator full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If you do well, you can stand out fairly easy.

    Cons

no focus, too many pivots, too much cash burn, lack of sensible business model and bad executive hires

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on one thing instead of trying hands at many. Successful execution is cohesive execution across all orgs - product management, sales, engineering, marketing. Even if one fails, its very hard to win.

Apart from current Engineering VP, every executive hire was a bozo!

Really enjoyed my time at Appcelerator

Former Intern - Applications Developer in Mountain View, CA
Former Intern - Applications Developer in Mountain View, CA

I worked at Appcelerator as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

    - Very friendly and talented people
    - Full range of mobile technology to learn and work with
    - Hard work is recognised
    - Awesome kitchen with free snacks and occasionally cooked food
    - Flexible vacation policy

    Cons

There were growing pains in the company at one point and my particular on-site subteam ended up much smaller than when I arrived.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Be a little more careful with expansion
    - Offices outside of Mountain View might need some more attention e.g. UK, SF
    - Keep hiring interns :)

    Sales nightmare

I worked at Appcelerator full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Mobile is very exciting and to some extent Appcelerator provides you the opportunity to be in the center of it. The technology platform is holistic, however I each individual component would not be considered best of breed.

    Cons

It is all smoke in mirrors. They claim to have this large ecosystem of developers using their technology. However, there are VERY FEW paying customers. Inbound leads do not exist the way they do for successful start ups and they are currently handled by one individual on the sales team. The rest of sales is in active hunt mode barely scraping by.

Titanium seems to be the only homegrown piece of technology offered in the platform today. The IDE, MBaaS, Testing Suite and Performance Management are all provided through acquisition or OEM. They have been able to advance certain aspects but if taken individually these are not best of bread technologies.

Management is a nightmare. They have no clue what they are doing to monetize. They are rubbing the few existing customers they have, and the prospects in their pipeline, the wrong way with constant price point changes.

Constant turnover at all levels. Frequent mass firings have gone on. Doesnt seem to be much rhyme or reason to it either.

I could never recommend this to anyone, BUT it does give you the chance to learn about mobile trends so 2 stars.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership needs to show up. I was hired with the promise that the CEO would present to the staff on a weekly basis. This happened maybe 3 times in the year I was there.

    Pros

Driven to do our best work
Some of the kindest folks you'll meet
    Well-intentioned management
    Cutting-edge technology
    Convenient location
    Kitchen is awesome
Support staff always tries to brighten your day :)

    Cons

Employees have tended to feel undervalued--either by lack of recognition or lack of coaching.
It really is run top-down by CEO, which can lead to a sense of lack of autonomy for certain departments.
There exists a sense of rule by fear due to lack of communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank you for being so passionate; I learned a great deal.
Please learn to delegate and respect those folks' decisions-it's why you hired them, right?
Don't forget your developer community; they are your evangelists and future!
Celebrate for wins and encourage collaboration between departments.
Stay passionate! I'm rooting for you all!!

    Pros

The mobile space is growing exponentially, and Appcelerator boasts one of the top products to service this market. Exciting times ahead!

    Cons

Can be hectic, with fire drills when your group becomes a focal point, but that tends to be the result of aggressive goal setting, which is an admirable trait.

Turned south when company stopped caring for its engineers

Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Mountain View, CA

I worked at Appcelerator full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Great engineering team, with some of the smartest people I have worked with.
    2. Have opportunity to learn and be exposed to many different technologies: iOS/Android/Windows/BlackBerry/... native platform, JavaScript/Java/Object-C/... as languages, then you have IDE/Cloud/...;
    3. Hot space and you feel you're right in the middle of the mobile wave and contributing;
    4. Very good kitchen, fully stocked.

    Cons

Unfortunately, even with all these positives, all those great engineers have been leaving left and right after the company stopped caring for them and turned the culture completely into sale-focused instead of engineering-focused. When engineering team delivered a massive release with tons of new features, the executive team would focus on the misses instead and hardly celebrate the accomplishments, but when sales missed their numbers (consistently), they simply lowered the projection and still went on trips and handed out awards. At one time, the end of year bonus for each person on the team was $25 Amazon gift certificate. The compensation is also not competitive in today's Silicon Valley market, and there were no mentions of salary raise until one decided to leave. The morale of whole engineering team was consistently low when keeping people feel energized should have not been difficult with the built-in positives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engineering is the heart-and-soul of any tech companies, so treat them with respect and care for them.

I worked at Appcelerator full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Working at the forefront of mobile applications in a start up that will try new ideas. Interesting technology in search of a business model.

    Cons

This is a top down enterprise. CEO sets strategy, deadlines, hiring/firing decisions. Work pace is either casual if your area isn't on his radar or chaotic if it is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in adult supervision. Respect the troops, and perhaps listen to them. Stop listening to the PR department and start listening to customers.

    Pros

The opportunity - mobile is the #1 project initiative for the Enterprise
The people - great group of motivated, successful, supportive, and collaborative people
The product - innovative, disruptive. Bottom line is the product works and provides solid benefit for customers

    Cons

Lots of changes that have negatively impacted morale. However, new leadership team has brought stability to the Company
Need more Marketing air cover to support Sales efforts
Need to establish the Channel to really scale the business

    I worked at Appcelerator

    Pros

Goofy office environment with scooters. Lot's of free food. A nice building. Good chairs. Showers in the nice smelling bathrooms.

    Cons

Appcelerator Titanium is a massive complex entity that was put together with chewing gum and scotch tape. Now the company founders have moved on to another product that would replace Titanium.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to find a way to make money from the mobile app space
