Great for freelancers and employees, for different reasons

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Cupertino, CA

I worked at Apple as a contractor for less than a year

ProsAs a contractor billing per hour, the pay is great, when compared to employees doing similar work.

Good, healthy food for low prices.

The chance to work on really big things.

Most managers don't bother you and let people do their job.

ConsLike any big corp, lots of useless meetings, but nobody seems to have a problem when people just don't show up for these.

Other Silicon Valley companies have free food and better drinks, Apple is kind of spartan in comparisson.

Contractors don't get many perks employees do get, like lunches and team trips. Makes you feel like upper management wants to create a divide between the two groups, although employees themselves don't act like that at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of that weird divide between contractors and employees.

I've heard that 18 interviews for a job are not uncommon, even when it's an internal application. Seems excessive to me.

There seems a more than healthy amount of bureaucracy and middle-management, seems like a waste me.

a barrel of genius monkeys

Family Room Specialist (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Apple part-time for more than 5 years

Prosthe opportunity to learn the best practices when catering to a demanding, entitled, and needy customer base. Customers of the Apple Genius Bar can be sweet and courteous, yes (its feels rare), but you'll learn that, in the end, everyone just wants something for nothing.

ConsManagement will not encourage you to think differently. Thinking Differently is how Apple innovates their products, not how they run a retail business.

Advice to Senior Managementlearn how to take feedback on the fly rather than deferring employees to NPP for people, or telling them to put things in the form of email because, what you're ultimately saying is, you don't care, unless it comes from a majority of people, of which, are too young and impressionable to question upper management anyways.

Extremely Inspiring Company

Creative (Apple Store) (Former Employee)
Tigard, OR

I worked at Apple full-time for more than 5 years

ProsApple is on the cutting edge of innovation in consumer electronics and software. It was so inspiring to be around very talented and inspiring people who all believed so strongly in similar ideals, yet all brought a variety of background and experience to the table.

ConsAfter a certain point, the potential to develop beyond your existing role became seemingly impossible. I was promoted twice and then hit the "glass ceiling" in my development.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote your people from within. That is how you keep talent and loyalty in the company.

Retail is a terrible environment for someone who has a family.

Business Specialist (Former Employee)
Sacramento, CA

I worked at Apple full-time for more than a year

ProsApple is a fun place to work

ConsPeople who start in retail get stuck there. It is impossible to jump to Corporate from Retail. Its easier to quit and reapply.

You'll never work with a smarter, more driven group of people

Software Engineer IV (Former Employee)

I worked at Apple full-time

ProsAmazing co-workers, the best products in the industry, a shot at really chaining the world.

ConsThe explosive growth over the last five years means that some of the middle management imports aren't really invested in the culture. Beware the big company 'experienced' managers who get brought in at the director level, it's a mixed bag.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork harder on internal career path and promotion, Apple's greatest asset is it's employee culture of diligence and user first design, and that's subject to dilution.
