    I worked at Applebee's part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very flexible if you make a good relationship with managers. The pay can go from extremely good to extremely bad, and you must work to get the good closing shifts.

    Cons

Very little training. Throw you straight into the serving life fire. If you have a bad serving team around you it makes the job very difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be a firm training period. There should be weekly power sessions and menu quizzes with more metrics to compare yourself to other servers.

    I worked at Applebee's

    Pros

There was norbing that wanted me to stay. Overall there was a negativity from the corporate folks( presidents etc. ) on down

    Cons

Couldn't pay our bonus when we made bonus. Always an excuse , pay raises were terrible 11.00 a week and they had me doing work at home on computer and not being compensated for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Work elsewhere

    I worked at Applebee's full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Apple Gold really does try to provide competitive compensation as well as a work/life balance.

Area Directors and Regional VP's are very likeable and have all been through the fire before as store managers. There's room for advancement as long as you take the initiative to improve your knowledge of FOH and BOH operations. Prefer to promote from within. As long as you're developing your staff you can and your staff can advance (not to mention it makes your job a lot easier.)

Corporate office will provide you with tons of feedback and training tools so you will constantly know where you stand against your peers.

    Cons

They TRY to work with you to provide a good work/life balance. It just doesn't always work that way. Turnover is inevitable in this industry which makes it hard to establish consistent management teams. Late night hours for hourly employees and managers isn't for everyone.

Menu is always changing. Constantly have to re-train staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cutting back on late night hours would help with manager and hourly turnover. It's harder on scheduling for management and staff when you have to stay open later. It's exhausting on all levels and makes it harder to control labor. Shortening the hours would keep people fresher and allow you to get another shift out of your top hourly employees (without risking OT after 4 days.) Servers don't make money late night due to less than ideal clientele. This makes it harder to staff those shifts, which then makes those shifts harder to manage (more difficult clientele + weaker servers.)
