  1. Great company until the merger with Intvitrogen

    I worked at Applied Biosystems

    Pros

Passionate and bright team. People enjoyed working there. For a biotech company had good work/life balance. Foster City campus was easy to reach from various spots on the peninsula and east bay.

    Cons

The merger with Invitrogen changed everything. The culture was totally different post-merger when it became Life Technologies, which was too bad. Lots of people left.

    Advice to Management

Should never have agreed to the acquisition. I would still be there if it was still ABI

  2. It was an ok company to work at.

    Pros

It was just an ok company to work at.

    Cons

There was disconnection between the upper management and the R&D teams, so often times the R&D groups had to figure out what to do without a unified direction. This led to unnecessary tensions between different groups. I left the company a few years ago, but I heard this culture still lingers there.

  3. Not bad

    Pros

    Good products and good people

    Cons

    They tend to buy talent

    Advice to Management

I have nothing to say to management

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of good people working there. Good place to move to different positions. Good management and benefits. Foster City is a nice location. There are lots of good equipment to work on and get very involved with the company.

    Cons

I do not see any cons except that sometimes they try to do things that are not going to work. The try to innovate when it is not broken.

    Advice to Management

    Good management

    Pros

Great pay, great co-workers, learned alot, very fun work environment

    Cons

Immense amount of work, worked harder here then anywhere. It was fun and great, but at times challenging and sometimes felt like too much. But still I don't regret the time I spent here. I was laid off along with my entire department, but still I hold no grudges.

  7. The R&D is very active.

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed the facility and working conditions at ABI. I could obtain almost anything that was needed for my research.

    Cons

People are not very friendly. Some managers tended to take other people's credits. If you were not good at kissing the ass of your manager, it would be hard for you to be promoted.

    Advice to Management

    Be fair to everybody.

  8. Excellent management process promoting from inside. Salaries plus performance bonus and stockoption plans are available.

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent location. Salary is tied to performance. Growth and career development opportunities. Standard benefits compatible to other biotech companies in the area.

    Cons

At the time I worked there, the company's financial were overextended and the company suffered a setback trying to grow too fast. Salaries are somehow lower to the market for same available positions.

    Advice to Management

Maintain promotion from inside and have salaries comparable to market.

    Pros

Some of the best people I have ever worked with. Most are leading scientists in their respective fields.

    Cons

Drifting from solutions that will enable discovery to solutions that make short-term money

    Advice to Management

In any high-tech industry a successful future requires dedication to excellence and innovation of product not "increased shareholder value", a short-term take-the-money and run strategy.

  11. Solution oriented, employee friendly company

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time

    Pros

Good management. Best in class products. Advancing science was a priority, and management understood the needs of it's base and made a priority of meeting those needs.

    Cons

Sometimes we ran very lean and the workload was higher than would be ideal for a proper work life balance.

    Advice to Management

    None.
