No interest in development of employees outside of technical fields

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Applied Materials full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSmart people, good people. Depending on what group or department you work in, your experience will vary sharply.

ConsGood ol' boy network; don't hold your breath to get ahead unless you plan on being there 10+ years or have no problem giving up your own attributes to do things the way they want - you get hired for your experience and breadth of knowledge and what you can bring to the table - then you're pretty much asked to be a parrot.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of management that has been with you longer than 10 years - they're no longer there to move the company forward, they are stagnating your growth as a company and stagnating the growth of the employees which report to them.

Displaced Worker

Manufacturing Engineer (Former Employee)
Santa Clara, CA

I worked at Applied Materials full-time for more than a year

ProsPeople and technology are first-rate.

ConsExecutive management is bent on either moving work off-shore or replacing people in USA with foreign workers (Chinese and Indian) after lay-offs.

Advice to Senior ManagementChinese are not respecting intellectual property as evidenced by the number of patent infringements found online in the form of copied parts. Stop sending technology off-shore and keep it in the USA and protect company assets. Keep the American employees that create and manufacture the technology that is the core of the business and provide respect to employees at all levels.

Exciting times ahead

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Applied Materials

ProsIt is fairly chaotic with a lot of current reorganizations being performed to realign for the future, but once that all setles down, it is going to be exciting for the next few years as we focus on market and with the TEL merger. This means there is a lot of potential for career advancement in such a situation.

ConsNear term chaos that occurs with reorganization. Several people can get lost in the shuffle and anyone new joining the company should do their homework to fully understand the bigger picture of where they are getting into. Getting into the right group/role will need a lot more work than usual, but the rewards will be greater.

Unsatisfied

Process Engineer III (Current Employee)
Sunnyvale, CA

I have been working at Applied Materials full-time for more than a year

ProsR&D work, good benefits. There is a very good potential if the management you are working with is good and focused.

ConsToo many managers and directors. Your contribution is not appreciated as it gets lost because of too many managers involved in a project. Managers are worried about themselves and no efforts to train and develop the new talents. If you are in a particular division, you get a chance to work with others but there is no new learning involved.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should be more focused. Management should take responsibility of people working under them.

One more VP from competitors joins AMAT

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Applied Materials full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood pay and strong prople

ConsNew CEO, CFO and their group of new executives have never managed a fortune 500 company but think they actually know how to, out of the blue

Advice to Senior ManagementStop listening to one product <$1B company executives from KLA and Varian. Terminate the non-accountable executive consultants and let experienced Applied Materials executives run the show as they have brought the company to its leadership position. Varian financials are now acknowledged to be strange compared the purchase price.
