I worked at Applied Materials full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Leading-edge technical work, collaborating with the smartest people both at AMAT and their customers, who are most technologically-advanced companies.

    Cons

Excessively top-heavy, often too political, frequent layoffs affecting not only people who deserve to be cut but really good people as well.

I worked at Applied Materials full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Why I stayed so long: great co-workers, really a smart talented, friendly group of people, and I respected and felt respected by them. Also, good benefits, reasonable work/life balance for my job (though perhaps not so much for travel jobs or process engineering, depending). My daily life was interesting--always a new challenge, a lot of learning over the years.

    Cons

Some challenges might come from lack of guidance to newer employees--many technical people are promoted to be managers without gaining the skills needed to mentor, so learning isn't as facilitated--which leads to a lot of inefficiencies. I worked during the 2009 downturn, so there wasn't much mobility in the company, so lack of growth, that's my personal experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in training managers to be mentors, andput more effort in the engineering groups into the process of development and passdown of knowledge, so reinventing the wheel isn't the norm. Bump some pay for people who stuck around through the 2009 downturn, as salaries are lower now than equivalent positions being advertised. Sick days vs PTO encouraged sick people to stay home and keep the office overall less sick. Finally, more HUBS.

I have been working at Applied Materials full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Exciting business environment with high technology products, and a company culture that allows motivated individuals to succeed. There are business and technical career opportunities to allow a great amount of flexibility in career choices. Applied offers a generous suite of benefits (bonuses, 401k match, healt/dental/vision, ESPP, RSU, etc...)

    Cons

Some of the expectations are aggressive, and there are times when the pressure is intense. Our customers are mostly in Asia, so sometimes schedule flexibility is required (late night conference calls, frequent travel, etc...).

    Pros

Well organized, a lot of people you can learn from, great training program, friendly working environment, pay well to interns

    Cons

Does not have return offer for internships, have to apply for new college graduate program which make things a little bit harder for interns who want to secure a full time position.
