    Pros

They treated employees fairly and were competitive with wages and benefits from what I could see.

    Cons

They were interested in large returns only. Products with steady long term profits did not get the attention needed to continue being profitable amid competitors. A lot of micro-managing from upper management expressed in ways that were counter-intuitive and detrimental to progress and morale.

    Advice to Management

Empower employees to invest time in products when it makes sense to do so.

I have been working at Applied Materials

    Pros

Good and professional teamwork, Opportunities to travel around the world, top management is very structured and has a good approach to identify customer's problems and develop a differentiated product

    Cons

A lot of travel because most customer and supply chain are in Asia. Equipment business is very cyclical ==> big up- and downswing

    Advice to Management

Continue current approach of new product development, but don't add to much bureaucracy

    Pros

I am giving my review 2 stars only because, 1: decent pay, 2: good benefits

    Cons

Where should I begin? 1. If you an unambitious, no aspiration to make a change, bored with life, or close to retirement, this is the perfect place for you! 2. No clear process in place. 3. Unqualified people are hired referred by someone in management or executive position. 4. They let go and hire the same people who were incompetent in doing the job to begin with. 5. Inexperienced managers who are not open to listening to staff, and incapable of managing them. 6. Unprofessional co-workers that are low-caliber employees. 7. In your face politics/Favoritism. 8. Building and facilities are old, dusty, and stuffy. 9. Old infrastructure/systems. 10. Old/refurbished computer/laptop.

    Advice to Management

Not worth giving advice to management.

    Pros

Opportunities to grow and move around. Plenty of opportunities to work on different projects.

    Cons

Project timelines can be challenging, especially if your stuck in a critical-chain item for a tool to be shipped to a customer. Constant firefighting of field issues can bog you down. Turn-over for some teams is quite high and back-filling vacant positions is extremely difficult, requires executive approval.

    Advice to Management

Please realize that this industry is ripe with opportunities for engineers and that you need to offer competitive reasons why to stay at AMAT. Turnover is a good indication of that. No-compete clauses in contracts won't prevent people from leaving.

    Pros

Good company , a lot of smart and talent people. Can learn a lot.

    Cons

To much politics and favoritism, pay scale is not fair. Very hard work, some more than others.Need to get more younger worker's for the future.

    Pros

When times are good there's close to unlimited overtime. Your'e also able to see the world on the company dime.

    Cons

The work is very cyclical and hard to plan your life. Sometimes the company wants you to travel on 3 days notice for months on end only to find that when you come back there may be nothing for you.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees and actually stand by what you say. Dont forget that youll need to bring in new talent to eventually replace your aging workforce.

    Pros

It's a good place to work with good salaries, benefits, with technically strong people and many others. Has perpetually been market and technology leader. This company (and others) enabled the electronics revolution.

    Cons

Typical of any large company, opportunities for advancement are lesser but still available if you are aggressive enough. They outsource a lot and have been turning over their old workers at a very high rate. Lot's of uncertainty these days with the TEL merger coming up but if you are a young worker, this might be the place to cut your teeth. Be prepared for crash course in aggressive politics.

    Advice to Management

Don't force something just because you feel like you have to, Gary. It's not possible with a behemoth like AMAT. Good stewardship is about all you should hope for with such a large company. Your customers do not want AMAT to own the market and will punish you for trying to. Respect your employees and stop the outsourcing to H1-Bs. Stockholders can never realize huge gains anyway. It's just not happening for them.
