I have been working at Applied Precision as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a small company working on exciting products. The hardware is state of the art and the company iterates quickly on new products. There isn't a wall at all between R&D and engineering, and I was able to contribute in a variety of facets. My work was very self-driven and I was given a great deal of autonomy.

    Cons

The codebase and tools used are quite old and in some cases out of date. At one point I had to do maintenance on a program written in FORTRAN. There were also times when I felt like my internship lacked direction.

    Pros

Excellent quality of employees Good sense of cooperation and teamwork Impressive technologies Well-intentioned people Good work location Relaxed culture

    Cons

Growth was fast but uneven and with some stumbles Management and leadership skill of the senior group varied greatly in quality over time Frequently too much shepherding for too few sheep

    Advice to Management

Involve yourself appropriately and with discretion Dig into the details with your reports to learn rather than challenge or question Understand your own strengths and weaknesses and act accordingly Know the strengths and weaknesses of your employees, play to their strengths and avoid loading areas of weakness Immerse yourself enough to know who the unsung heroes are

    Pros

Now owned by GE. Potential for improvement of the employee relations situation. They employ some really brilliant scientists and engineers.

    Cons

Unless you are a design engineer or a member of the Good Ol' Boys Network, you are likely to not be acknowledged or recognized

    Advice to Management

Invest in all the employees, work on creating a team atmosphere, break down the walls between R and D and operations.
