    Pros

Flexible work environment, decent pay and benefits, great people (engineers) to work with.

    Cons

Work location and travel commute to the manufacturing plants can be burdensome. The industry can be a dangerous place to work for some. Sometimes the work is not very challenging.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to find ways to satisfy the young engineers. Keep them challenged and encouraged in the industry.

  2. Good initial, but dirty and dangerous work, treat employees poorly

I worked at ArcelorMittal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay was good, but may stagnate quickly

    Cons

You will often be treated with disrespect, and getting yelled at is part of the company culture. About half the people in my hire group and half of the supervisors quit within two years. I specifically asked in all my interviews what the standard work day was like, and was met with dodgy answers. My standard work day was from 6-4, and frequently had to stay past then. You may be subject to rotating shifts (they did not mention any of that in the interview process). Their safety record is not good; OSHA injury rate is significantly over industry averages

    Advice to Management

I have little advice other than do not work here.

    Pros

High-paced environment especially if working in production unit. Phenomenal learning opportunities.

    Cons

Life outside work may suffer depending on position. 16 hour days and weekends not uncommon.

    Advice to Management

More transparency with lower levels of management.

    Pros

Brand recognition Interact with workforce from poland, romania, czech republic, france, luxembourg, india, venezuela, brazil, china... you name it Very close to the world market movers

    Cons

Still complicated due to $32B merger many years ago Forced rationalization always comes too little, too late Indebted company, "junk" status

    Advice to Management

Cut out some of the tectonic layers of non-operations middle management ("technical advisors") Get rid of the centralized system for SAP administration and logistics chartering Stop flooding the domestic US market with lower quality material

I have been working at ArcelorMittal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great for empowerment of people : you are free to launch your projects/initiatives (with no budget of course) and that is quite exciting. It is amazing how so many things can be achieved in such a large organization. High-quality standards: you will be pushed hard to deliver the best results. Work/life balance is OK Good working atmosphere (corporate) - intellectually interesting challenges This company is an empire.

    Cons

Driven by constant pressure on costs (incl. on projects) Short term view of senior management Successes are not decently rewarded

    Advice to Management

Management by fear is counter-productive and belongs to the past.

    Pros

Multicultural organization with interesting people. Always a possibility to work in different countries worldwide.

    Cons

Workload in the company is very high due to the post crisis reductions. Difficult to get the vacation list signed in advance. Overtime is not paid. Bonus payment is not fully transparent. Constantly changing organization.

I have been working at ArcelorMittal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

High exposure to real responsibilities from the beginning and important opportunity to learn a lot quickly on the job. Large company and spend with important worldwide presence, enabling to build a good CV seen from other companies.

    Cons

No career/compensation evolutions. High targets of cost reductions, impacting mainly employees and working conditions. Nothing is done to retain talents or to build sustainable organization. Short-term oriented in all decisions.

    Advice to Management

Build and apply a real HR policy and not just communicate about it without any action. Retention of talents should the key focus, as it is useless to developp people without keeping them in the organization. The current HR strategy is more based on reducing the costs than to build a staff able to create value.
