Pros
Largest steel manufacturer in the world with av very fast past environment.
Cons
Hard to be recognized in the organization. It lacks the ability to have a structured growth and development program for new hires.
Advice to Senior Management
Work on cost management of corporation and deviate from the silo approach to improve quality of communication and cross department confusions.
Pros
Great people to work with. Family values and commitment to health and safety are second to none. Location near Chicago, but far enough away to stay out of commuting. Northwest Indiana has very low cost of living. Bonuses can be very nice - Up to 20%.
Cons
USA is a conglomeration of legacy steel mills. Systems and SOPs are not consistent. Implementing programs across divisions is extremely difficult. Management focus is on operations while all other functions take a back seat. Difficulties retaining talent
Advice to Senior Management
Consolidate legacy company systems. Provide more flexibility for current employees to move around the company
Pros
Salary, Benefits, and schedule flexibility
Cons
Culture, working conditions, vacation time
Pros
Some of the best reasons to work for ArcelorMittal is the ability to work on dynamic machinery and state of the art technologies.
Cons
Some of the cons of working at ArcelorMittal have to be not having the ability to work with more of a diverse team.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership at ArcelorMittal needs to continue to understand and work with its employees in order to optimize their output and as a result to optimize the output of the overall mill.
Pros
Challenging environment. Lean staffing. Slow growth.
Cons
Low in career development/advancement. Union and legacy company issues make for difficult working atmosphere.
Advice to Senior Management
Implement more contemporary culture to keep young, talented workers.
Pros
Management is focused on safety of employees. There are some very skilled, knowable employees who work here. The company puts a lot of emphasis on new hires and their development.
Cons
The company does not demonstrate how valuable it's employees are. The company is so large with so many layers of management, it is difficult to communicate properly.
Advice to Senior Management
Your employees would be more productive if you treated us more like we were valuable.
Pros
There are some really great, innovative people working there; people willing to help and "hear" employees -at all levels. Being around these types of employees can make working here a good expereince -for a time. Having a good manager of course also helps.
Cons
Like any employer, some not so great people; it seems long-time employees are eventually promoted to management level, unfortunately there seemed to be many examples of managers not suited for the management role due to behavior not consistent with management or simply were not effective in the manager role.
While an international company, the USA management group seems to be purely domestic in its focus. That just doesn't seem consistent with the company culture as a whole.
Advice to Senior Management
Positions of management should be carefully considered and not based soley on years of service. Ineffective and "problem" employees should not be moved around but dealt with more appropriately.
Pros
It is a global company that has a lot of branches in the US and throughout the world.
They stress on safety of employees
Cons
It is an uncomfortable environment dealing with either very hot or cold temperature as well as dirty equipment (typical steel manufacturing environment)
Pros
you will see all aspects of the business should you elect to get involved or not. Early on you will see how depts interact to get the business of making steel done. Once participating in the chaotic environment, it will seem overwhelming and you will either sink or swim to keep up with what you perceive to be the way the business world must operate. So you will knuckle down and show that you can swim with the best of them, learning along the way about the industry. This is where the good stops.
Cons
then one day you will wake up and wonder where the last X years have gone. Certainly not unique to ArcelorMittal, but this is your reward nonetheless. You'll begin to wonder why you now spend more time in MS Office and as every day drudges along, less time in the field doing what you love. This is not the company for the person who wants decisionmaking at the ground level.
Advice to Senior Management
theres not enough horsepower at the ground level to deliver everything you demand.
Pros
Reasonable starting salary. Working is relatively easy.
Cons
The management was pretty bad. Compensation is unaligned with contribution. Most engineers solve problems in non-engineering ways. Those older engineers who are scared of losing their jobs so they are not willing to teach new employees. Overall, it is not a bad place for people who would not be able to find an engineering job somewhere else.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't waste too much resources those nonproductive employees.
