I worked at Arch Capital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a stable company with good benefits, and most of the people are really nice and great to work with. Very friendly people who'll always say hi even if you're not in the same department. They survived the recession well and have an overall good business model. With a good manager, you can learn a lot. I had a lot of on the job training and learned a lot of valuable skills.

    Cons

There's a large company culture to push people to work late and weekends all the time. People brag about how many hours they've worked and been away from their families. If you're lucky enough to have a good manager who doesn't care about that, your manager will still take the heat for it. The company doesn't appreciate the IT employees, except maybe a handful. After 4 1/2 years of working there, my salary raised 4K from when I started. And that was with a promotion/title change. I was told that raises would be bad because the whole company's still struggling from the recession, and then weeks later was told by the CEO at a company party that we're doing great, one of the best in the industry. But IT doesn't bring in the clients and make the big bucks like underwriters, so we don't matter as much.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees more. If they have complaints, act on them, try to fix them. Don't just listen and nod your head. We know when nothing changes. And stop treating employees like robots, and start treating them more like humans. Don't act like you're doing someone a huge favor by "letting" them take time off to take care of a child or family member, and then passing them up for a promotion because of it. if your employees aren't getting their work done in 40 hours a week, then there's something wrong with YOUR management skills.
