    Pros

Competitive salary and benefits. It's a growing and stable business, with ample budgets for travel and professional development. They really invest in their people. Interesting subject matter. It has a global presence and is very focused on international dimensions of news. Good job for someone looking to transition from a job in the energy sector into journalism. If you find energy markets interesting, it's a great fit.

    Cons

Not a lot of room for advancement, mostly because there is little turnover in management positions. Many editors with often conflicting views. As a news outlet, no one outside of the energy community has ever heard of it. The editorial bent tends to favor energy companies and discount or ignore other points of view. If you have a background in journalism, it is probably not for you.

    Pros

Good place to learn about energy markets. Argus is constantly hiring for editorial. The company is in overall good financial health.

    Cons

The company's Houston editorial room reward achievement, its fast growth path has a negative effect on quality. Editorial management is too much preoccupied looking good to senior management to notice or care. Not much room to grow.

    Advice to Management

Create culture of competence and excellence. Incentivize performance.

    Pros

Good place to learn about the industry and build a network of outside contacts. Chances to do some creative analysis. Good health care benefits.

    Cons

No bonus or incentive to do extra work. No pension plan. The work of doing a newsletter with good weekly content turned into a repetitive grind. You have to build relationships with external people that frequently do not want to talk to you. In some products, Argus network needs to be built up. The workload was high because in addition to collecting, analyzing and writing news, we were tasked with various annual analysis books and special studies. It is difficult to take real vacation because there is no backup. When people quit, it can take a long time to fill that position, so some people were doing 1.5 jobs. Lots of price reporting agency competitors and potential contacts and customers may get bombarded with other price reporting agencies calling them. So not all contacts want to talk.

    Advice to Management

Rotate people between newsletters and consulting projects. Constantly having some staff on the front line churning out newsletters can tire them out. Work consulting projects and annuals with dedicated staff that do not have a daily or weekly distraction of having to publish news. Expand the number of analysts. Management focus on creating new products and new forecasts may simply add workload with minimal return on invested time. Focus more on making the core products strong and stronger. Add staff.

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to learn energy markets and commodities. Can be a stepping stone to trading or a career in journalism. Hard work can be handsomely rewarded with significant pay increases. The benefits are very good, health care will cost you next to nothing, 50% 401K match, 3-weeks of vacation at the start with annual increases in vacation time. No requirement to work weekends

    Cons

Management could listen more to employees about how to improve reports and stories. There's a lot of turnover here because there isn't much room from advancement, only lateral moves across different energy / commodity markets. The news room seems to be perpetually understaffed and many people seem to never leave their desk. The flat structure of the organization makes it easier for co-workers and other departments to push more work on you -- be ready to set limits for yourself

    Advice to Management

Give new hires a chance to advance to editor status, make a move sales or business development. As reporters become experts in their markets, it would make sense to send them into the field sometimes to promote the company and show clients that the people working at this company are very smart

    Pros

Working as a reporter at Argus gives you a terrific understanding of global energy/commodities markets. The hours are reasonable, colleagues are very friendly and helpful, and the company is stable/growing. Employees are serious about doing good work, but the office atmosphere is fairly relaxed.

    Cons

Some of the work is a bit tedious, and the tedium is exacerbated by unwieldy technology. The company could make its editorial teams more productive--and in turn provide better information to its clients--by modernizing its technology.

    Advice to Management

Employees may benefit from more extensive training. Also, turnover seems to be a problem. Pay to retain experienced employees.

    Pros

cafeteria in basement, proximity to galleria mall

    Cons

no one is friendly unless they're on the phone with a client

    Advice to Management

more transparency would benefit the whole workplace overall. no one ever knows whats going on between 1 person to the next, 1 department to the next thus causing unnecessary redundancy in EVERYTHING
