    Good

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Pittsburgh, PA

ProsLow key environment and good benefits, lots of vacation time. Over all I like Ariba a lot. Good place to work your way up.

ConsWork long hard hours, it can be highly demanding at times. Management changes pretty often compared to other companies I've worked for. People switch positions a lot.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement could have a better understanding of how demanding the work can be at times. Thats all the advice I have.

    Try to keep up

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

Pros. Agile, no BS, get the job done.
    . Smart people.
. People work with you to help unblock issues.
. Spend management product ideal for the economic downturn, so company actually made money.

    Cons. Prepare to work.
. Things are very high paced. If you don't keep up, then you'll end up getting dragged along on the ground .. face down.
. You are just a grunt unless you've been there long enough to be deemed valuable to be promoted.
. Escalations are rampant. Always feeling you are in reactive mode rather than proactive.

Advice to Senior ManagementSlow down and let people catch up. Granted, some people are just too slow and those needs to be dealt with, but everybody needs a breather. You're dragging more people through the dirt with the current pace than you realize.

    An OK place to work

    Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsLot of smart folks, Stock is going very good. Stable job

ConsThere is no work life balance and not much career growth. Just keep working 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Very poor leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect your employees and don't treat them as robots who can work 24/7. Employees play a big role in Ariba's success so don't hesitate in acknowledging that

It's who you know, not what you do

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsLeader in the space. Has made a transition from on-premise to on-demand technology - one of the few companies that has been able to make this jump. Stock price has been jumping.

ConsPolitics will get you up the ladder, not productivity. The leadership team is thin on the products and technology experience outside of Ariba. Organizational structure is strange and still shows the effects of growing by acquisition with lots of battles among the tribes.

Investment in infrastructure has been lacking, and the company is inefficient because of it.

Sunnyvale may be the official HQ of Ariba, but everyone knows that Atlanta is the emerging and de facto HQ for Ariba.

Advice to Senior ManagementHow about a normal organizational structure? How about resolving the multiple overlapping groups? Oh, and why not share some of those millions that you guys are milking from the company?

    Good to be the leader

    Sales (Current Employee)
    Pittsburgh, PA

Pros- Extremely smart, dedicated and fun people
    - Regional leadership is strong
    - Market leadership makes it easier to get to decision makers
    - Good benefits -- health and 5 weeks vacation (including shut down week between Christmas and New Year's Day)
    - Despite the bad press, Calderoni is a good guy who cares about his people
    - Marketing (especially events such as AribaLive) are very well done and helpful

Cons- Bureaucracy -- decisions are made by large committees
    - Deal approval process is arduous, adding weeks to sales cycle
    - Key management members manage by fear and intimidation
    - Politics are very thick for a such a small company
    - Lead development is weak. You need to drive 100% of your own pipeline

Advice to Senior Management- Understand that culture is built by action not words.
    - Remember that most people respond to intimidation by leaving.
    - Use the company's stock to reward your people, more often. It's a great retention tool.

Good job with a company going through a rebirth

    Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
    Sunnyvale, CA

ProsThe company is in a great place to capitalize on it's position in the industry as the market rebounds. But aside from the company position, it's an employer that does a great job of giving flexibility, work/life balance and good compensation.

ConsCommunication across the multiple cities and departments could be better. And sometimes it feels as though we can't decide if we are a big or small company, the danger being we'll slip into the bad characteristics of each.

Advice to Senior ManagementWe need more open access and communication with senior leaders and decision makers. The company is not so large that we shouldn't have good, fast, open communication across teams, departments, vertical titles and locations.

    ProsLot of very smart people
Lot of opportunity to contribute and grow
Good products which give it market leadership
    Fast paced environment

    ConsQuality issues have plagued Ariba

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to make the org good for an average employee. Not all employees are willing to be pushed to their limits.

    Workload

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Pittsburgh, PA

ProsFlexibility in working arrangements as an option

    ConsLack of Management training and/or recognition; Keep your head down and just do your job, oh and the job of 2 other people that we let go/reassigned as we aren't going to backfill;

Advice to Senior ManagementLet go of the "rah rah everyone is working hard - keep it up" and just tell everyone it's not going to stop - you are going to work way more hours than you have in a day and you just need to suck it up.
