    Customer Support Ran Like Highschool

    I worked at Ariba

    Pros

The employees I worked with, original "potential" of growth, "cutting edge" procurement software.

    Cons

Where to begin... Promotions are not merit, experience or skill based, rather they are strickly based on looking or acting a certain way. When confronted about why people with lower satisfaction, less tenure and less work experience were promoted and what I can do to get the promotion they next time leadership replied "you're doing great we just decided to go in a different direction."

After hearing that 5 times with no constructive or just flat out criticism to work with, I took my talents elsewhere. I only wish I did it sooner rather than follow the dangling carrot.

Leadership treat the support employees as bodies to answer the phone, nothing more. Sure your team lead will appease you but its all for naught unless you look and act like the vapud drones they wish to surround themselves with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you care about keeping outstanding, productive, free-thinking employees; change how you promote. If not, carry on.

I have been working at Ariba full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

For the first time in my career I am treated as an adult who can manage my time and projects without being micromanaged. The culture is one where you are given the ability to obtain your goals on your own schedule whether that be 8am or 8pm it's up to you. This concept actually makes you more productive as you chose the best time to optimize your time.

    Cons

Due to the size and complexity of the various departments you have to be someone who is willing to reach out to others for guidance and product knowledge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue promoting the culture, never allow it to die!

    Pros

Strength of the people in general. Pay is good.

    Cons

Unrealistic dreams, insufficient funding to actually deliver. Many projects have gotten killed as a result.
Really heavy process creates too much friction. Lack of willingness to prioritize and really fix things.
Things now worse with the SAP acquisition. Is quite political.

    I worked at Ariba full-time

    Pros

Ariba (especially with its acquisition by SAP) is a major player in spend management software and business commerce. It is a great place to begin your career and get experience (while earning a decent salary). The SAP ownership opens many doors to employees as the company grows.

Much of the small/mid-sized company feel had changed before I left, but teams working around office locations were still tight-knit (of those people that actually did come into an office).

    Great time-off policy.

    Cons

It is frustrating to see the company develop new technology so slowly. It feels like there is not much room for innovation and that Ariba did not adapt to more agile competition until it was far too late.

There seemed to be a major off-shore shift in development during my time there. While the overseas developers were strong, the standard challenges of working across time zones really hurt the speed and flexibility of the product development.

    Pros

interesting space to be in during the dot com days

    Cons

management tended to have their favorites and consolidated those people in whatever location they were in so it was sometimes hard to move up if you did not want to relocate
