I worked at Arizona Department of Health Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are outstanding. The people you work with are dedicated to serving the greater good and it shows. Option to telecommute offered to employees who request it and have a position that is conducive to telecommuting. Some managers are fantastic, others micromanage, but that's to be expected in any office environment. Stellar place to work and I enjoyed my time there.

    Cons

Pay isn't competitive. Some managers micromanage, which is irritating. Inter-office politics can be draining.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give employees the space, tools and confidence to do their job well. Micromanaging only results in employees doing what's necessary in order to avoid getting written up. Have faith in your employees and they'll do the same.

I have been working at Arizona Department of Health Services as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

You are treated like an adult unless someone is having a bad day.

    Cons

Communication on every level, even face to face with colleagues is awful. And if your boss, or your bosses boss is having a bad day they take it out on you. These are the stupidest people I have ever worked with; they don't ask questions, they just take things off your desk or area that you're working in even if you're right there watching them do it. I gave someone a note and she said it was mean, and when I asked her how it was mean all she said is, "It just is." Stupid, stupid people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to communicate. Learn HOW to be professional.

Great opportunities for gaining experience but can only go so far.

    Pros

One advantage of working for the government is that there are always opportunties to gain new experience. Other employees are usually willing to share knowledge and one often gets to work on a wide variety of projects. If one is willing to take on additional assignments there are plenty of opportunities for advancement and additional experience. Very good benefits and work life balance.

    Cons

One can only go so far. Entry level and midmanagement positions are fairly competitive with other jobs in health care, but once a certain level is reached, compensation is limited. All of the various levels of policies and proceedures can also be frustraiting at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With limited options available for rewarding high performing employees, must find additional ways to make jobs attractive.
