I worked at Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ability to telecommute with some positions and flexible start time.

    Cons

Current Inspector General does not care for her employees and has fired most of her management. Before you think the reason for this is because she is simply putting in her own management team, consider that she also gets rid of people that she herself has hired and/or promoted. As mentioned in a previous post, HR at AHCCCS seems to just do what management wants or is incompetent. Several employees were disciplined by HR investigations, but were never specifically told what they did or when the supposed violation occurred.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention! When you have well respected supervisors who have been there for more than a decade leave or when you have people leave after being promoted just months before, you have a problem. An exit interview should be done by upper management outside of the OIG to accurately see what is going on.

    Pros

Easy job, 8-5' Mon-Fri. Option to work from home after 1 year probationary period expires. Social service that is important for the community and feels rewarding at times.

    Cons

Denying applications for financial reasons isn't always the easiest conversation to have with someone who needs help.

I have been working at Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits and great pension, plus public service student loan debt forgiveness applies. Many of the employees really do want to do a good job.

    Cons

You will be micromanaged to within an inch of your life. You will be surrounded by people who do not have up to date skills. You won't have recent technology at your fingertips. Below market pay.

    Advice to Management

Encourage the upkeep of basic business skills. Continue to bring in more staff from the private sector.

Casual dress is the best part of it, and sometimes even the people. Depends where you sit and what your current position is.

    Cons

They expect you to work hundreds of cases and refuse to give raises or bonus for great work. You tap out your pay at about 14 and some change.

I have been working at Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good. They offer many pre-tax deductions, vision, dental, medical. The offer a defferred comp retirement plan through nationwide services. The standard M-F, 8-5 schedule is nice.

    Cons

The middle management is all women, and the human resources are all women, they are all buddy-buddy, and therefore cannot do anything wrong. Human resources will do whatever the middle managment decides unless the employee is complaining about harassment, which has to be investigated. Be very cautious seeking employment with AHCCCS.

    Advice to Management

Drop the 'do as I say, not as the policy is written attitude.' Stop writing your own anual reviews.

    Pros

Great benefits and retirement. Work optional.

    Cons

There is a lot of dead wood in some departments, despite layoffs. Some managers keep their friends collecting paychecks for year with no discernible work products.

    Advice to Management

There is poor management in some divisions, so good employees soon learn to sit and do nothing, or disappear to "virtual office" and run side businesses on State time.

    Pros

It is a Government Job, that's the only good thing about it.

    Cons

Management choose favorites for Information Services Information Technology. Their friends get to work from home not average hardworking individuals. Testing is not structured, it is chaotic.

    Advice to Management

Stop taking advice from your non-management employees on how to run the department and what you should do or say to an employee. If you can't handle testing as a management lvl 4 then move on and let someone else that knows how to run the department take over. Stop putting down the developers as they do an excellent job with the time they are allotted. Get fresh blood the mgmt currently is holding the department back from accomplishing the objectives and goals of AHCCCS.
