Pros
The colleagues. Most are really good and helpful. It's a very interdisciplinary environment.
Cons
The administration. They seem to waste a lot of resources on a few flagship initiatives, while completely ignoring the other departments. When an upper administrator messes up, he gets "promoted" to some silly job while retaining pay. There's complete chaos on who's in charge of what, since it seems to change every day (at President Crow's whim).
Salary and retention in general. Once in, there's no possibility for growth other than leaving.
Advice to Senior Management
See above.
Pros
Solid research for a graduate student
Cons
Working over weekends all the time
Advice to Senior Management
more self-motivated projects
Pros
ASU is a nice place to work. Good environment and good funded projects. The professors here are knowledgeable and passionate about research.
Cons
Teaching is not as good as research as the funding is mainly from research. But some professors' classes is really good.
Advice to Senior Management
Mainly for Phds' education. Enhance the capability of the teaching part of graduate student. Prepare graduate students especially Phds better for academic jobs.
Pros
Responsibility at the start, excellent work environment, friendly coworkers
Cons
Low compensation, little room to advance.
Advice to Senior Management
Stronger development program for new hires
Pros
low living cost, freedom, good facilities
Cons
too hot, sometimes bad professors
Advice to Senior Management
Please lower the expense of the study, and rise the stipend of the graduate student, for 5 years the stipend doesn't change while the expense of study increases almost 60%
Pros
Was a powerful opportunity to work with smart students doing important work
Cons
Might have been good to have a grading component as well as pay to attract top students
Advice to Senior Management
Build on the concept-- very powerful
Pros
Very good package for students. They paid all of my tuition and insurance. I have my own office and computer.
Cons
All the paperworks need to be completed in order to get data. We wasted one full semester for paper work.
Advice to Senior Management
Speed up paperwork process. Less changing school names and celebrate it. I don't see why change name of school is important.
Pros
Overall, working at ASU was a good experience. The hours were flexible and I had a good group of co-workers. Also, there were always new and interesting problems to solve.
Cons
Wasn't that bad until the budget cuts -- which ASU had little control over.
Advice to Senior Management
None
Pros
THe Medical benefits and vaction are fantastic
Cons
too much politics and not able to move up
Advice to Senior Management
Trust that your employees are able to do their job .
Pros
Scientist are first rate, they demand the best from their colleagues. Their work focuses on resolving todays world issues in collaboration with organizations from all over the world. Feeling of being part of something greater.
Cons
Management and politics play too big of a role. Short sided decision making. University budget is too fluid and is irrevocably linked to the state's budget.
Advice to Senior Management
Have a long term plan in place where extreme focus is given to only a few areas. Goal, become global leaders in these areas. Create and strengthen relationships with collaborators.
