Tempe, AZ

Current Employee – been working at Arizona State full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI have experienced good colleagues, interesting work, and considerable variation in work, which makes the position interesting. I find research and teaching to be highly satisfying.

ConsSometimes, it is not always evident exactly where the college is headed. This leads to considerable frustration on the part of faculty colleagues.

ProsMost supervisors are very understanding of student course loads. Generally, they are supportive of your educational pursuit and will assign less work during busy times. However, this can very depending on your supervisor and the department you work with in.

ConsWork load tends to overlap with finals. This can very depending on what kind of job you have (i.e. working for a professor vs. working in an administrative role in a misc. department).
Base pay is not outstanding but this is offset by the tuition break.

Phoenix, AZ

Current Employee – been working at Arizona State full-time for more than 3 years

ProsA state university with cheaper fees

ConsLack of transparency. No absolute knowledge of the changing policies/funding etc., from government funding agencies (NIH/NSF). No appreciation for employee credentials, administration runs like a club, where only the faces that are known to the higher ups are promoted, the rest are not allowed to share their experience or rise up the ladder.

Worst policy on vesting ever seen in corporate or academia. Five years for vesting, loose all the employer contribution if left sooner.

Advice to Senior ManagementWake up.

Tempe, AZ

Former Employee – worked at Arizona State as a contractor for more than a year

ProsNice parking. No traffic. Academic atmosphere.

ConsI had an academic professional position on salary. Because I'm not by the hour, if my boss asked me to work on holidays or weekends, I had to. I called HR and they didn't help because I was on salary. I felt like I was abandoned by the admin. They treat some scientists like rockstars because they have funding.

Advice to Senior ManagementPostdocs are people, too.
