I worked at Arlington Park Racetrack full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The VP of Marketing, Ken Kiehn is wonderful to work for. He is very good at his job and able to work and teach you to make you better

    Cons

Politics are bad. If you happen to get on the bad side of other VPs and/or Directors, you are sure to be released from your job.

    Pros

I gained customer service experience and learned how to think on my feet. Easy job.

    Cons

Bad hours, bad patrons, and it was obvious that they were going under. They would send employees home early and I didn't get enough hours.

I have been working at Arlington Park Racetrack part-time

    Pros

It is a good baptism into corporate America for high school and college students. Most of the rank and file employees are a lot of fun and easy to work with. Churchill Downs has a good benefit and 401k package for it's full time employees. You get to deal with all walks of life which leads to learning valuable communication and problem solving skills.

    Cons

Upper management seems only interested in milking short term profits and lining their personal pockets then trying to make the race track "work again" long term. Their obsession with bringing in slots to save the day is extremely short sighted and a bit delusional. And to say upper management is "the good old boys club" is an understatement. Morale among the ranks is woefully bad and filters throughout the entire park staff. Client tell has changed dramatically over the years thanks to short term marketing schemes. It is not the "family friendly" environment the track preaches about it anymore but one long frat/sorority party every summer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Frankly the long term financial stability of the race track is beyond the point of repair especially with employee morale being so bad. As it is, horse racing seems destined to be gone for good within the next twenty years or so. Instead of milking the profits to line your already insanely fat pockets why not share the wealth a bit especially with the hard working employees that been loyal for so many years as a reward before the lights go out for good?

I worked at Arlington Park Racetrack part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working at the actual racetrack was fun because you get to work with and interact with new people everyday, not to the incredible views. Being near horses all day was also a plus.

    Cons

Some managers are on a power trip and tend to not really care to get to know their employees. No positive reinforcement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would suggest getting rid of the old look and decorate the park to look more modern. Also, some better technology. Managers should try to communicate and actually get to know their employees better, maybe then there won't be so much turn around.

I worked at Arlington Park Racetrack part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

You can cash your check there. You get to see at least some of the races. Great Company and supervisors. The employees care about the people who come there. Awesome teamwork

    Cons

If you are guest services the jackets are a little warm if you are stationed in the sun. Don't work here if you have a problem with gambling or drinking. It would be to easy off hours to get yourself into trouble. Lots of conversations so maybe not good if you are shy or think patrons would rather be left alone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check with employees. You do this already, but maybe if they are calling off or in. You may have a very valuable employee who's odds are against her/him at home. (like competition of the person getting more independent) They may just need someone to pull them in when the waves are high...................

I worked at Arlington Park Racetrack full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You get a ton of experience because they just throw you into your job with little training; you learn how to handle a ton of scenarios; you get great customer service experience; you'll get to do some cool things that you've never had the chance to experience like wedding planning and interacting with international horse owners.

    Cons

Low pay for the long hours you work; you don't get credit for everything you do because your boss will take the credit, but if you do something wrong, everyone will hear about it; for as busy as you are during the summer, you're equally not busy during the off season and it can be very boring; the dress code: girls are required to wear panty hose and cover their shoulders, even during the summer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be so hard on your employees in the off season; cut them some slack when they arrive five minutes late or need to leave five minutes early; treat all your employees the same, as in if you let someone wear a skirt that's too short because they're "good looking", don't be mad when other people wear skirts that are too short.

    Pros

Good pay I guess. It is a steady job as well. The people are pretty cool if you get on a good shift

    Cons

There are a lot of dumb people ho work in other areas of the racetrack. It makes gettign upset a very easy thing to do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. You implement strategies that make sense on paper, but are not practical

I have been working at Arlington Park Racetrack

    Pros

Very easy job. Great if you only want to work during the summer. A good starting job for a high school student or someone with little work experience.

    Cons

Lack of communication between departments. You only work on the weekends and you have to work on holidays and big racing days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should listen to the employees ideas more and relay messages to everyone they affect not just the supervisors. Talk to the employees that don't work in the offices, they have great ideas.
