    Pros

At least you're not cleaning out an elephant cage in 120 degree heat.

    Cons

Long hours, low pay, low morale, no support from management. No work/life balance. Customers are the absolute worst, and let their kids run around out of control. Horrible "AAFES Radio Network" music being played ad nauseum.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the overhead music, pay people better wages, reinstate logistical support for retirees and former military personnel. The majority of items are overpriced and overstocked. Quit ripping people off and dare to show us what the profit margin really looks like.

    Pros

Schedule flexibility, friendly co-workers, direct deposit

    Cons

Upper management would curse at you in front of customers and never respected lower management. Upper management expected you to know how to do stuff without being shown.

    Pros

meeting different cultured customers and the soldiers

    Cons

whats good for one employee should be good for all employees. example of schedule 1 cant work nights at all and get to work days constantly. If someone else needs to work day shift for a short time period you get harrased and told you are to be avail for all shifts. Management needs to quit showing favortism,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start showing respect where the respect belongs not to your ICA's, SAM's or yourselves. Your parttime and temp employees are the ones doing the job to make your stores look perfect no one else.

    Cons

Management, not flexible hours, won't let you use sick or vacation leave, mess up payroll, other coworkers in different departments don't do their job so they made my department do it.

    Pros

Some of the people are really nice and its good for military spouses or someone who is retired and has no other obligation.

    Cons

Manager. There are a few shift managers that will work well with the associates, but some managers, especially the Facility managers, are terrible. Insulting, rude, ignorant, don't work with schedules or around school, invade privacy, demand information about employees they don't need to know.

    Pros

Only pros if you know someone with influence

    Cons

AAFES HQ in Dallas is a joke. On the outside it looks like a great company to work for. But once employed, you realize most people aren't qualified for their position. The only way you move up is if you know someone. Most management doesn't know how to "manage", they just sit back and collect a check.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to listen, manage and perhaps read.

Former Employee - Warehouse Worker in Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany)

    Pros

At the time of working there it was the only opportunity to obtain logistical support to stay in Europe.

    Cons

My experiences are only from a 2 year period while working for AAFES in Germany.

Poor salary, workers scheduled for maximum amount of hours allowed while still remaining "part-time" which saves the company paying for health insurance, sick leave, vacation leave, or any other full-time benefit options.

Three bosses which consistently harassed employees to work faster/more while only one of them actually did any sort of work.

Pay was terrible, very difficult to live if it was the only income.

Discouraged from taking any sort of leave/absence during the job. No vacation time = leave without pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Effective review processes of supervisors, employee incentives, offering a competitive salary even if many of us only have you as an option. Commission for sales staff may also increase business in certain regions.
