I have been working at Art Center College full-time

    Pros

    Good reputation and great students.

    Cons

Poor job culture, political work environment, power effectively rests with department chairs, an assumption of incompetence of all new hires, limited opportunities for advancement and poor human resources. Experiencing some growing pains. Might be a better work environment in the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Art Center thinks of itself as unparalleled, but much could be learned from competing art and design schools and other universities.

I have been working at Art Center College full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Because this is a small college it can be a good place to take on more varied work so as to learn new skills. The school seem to be a little more flexible (or possibly just less picky) about who they hire so you might be able to get a start here in an educational administrative career. The trick is that you may very possibly have to move to another institution if you want any real upward movement in your career, if only because the school is so small.

Another pro is that benefits are decent.

    Cons

A lot of resistance to change. A lot of self-importance among the executives, and the place is top heavy (ie dominated by the executives) in general. The culture among staff lower down the totem-pole tends to be more "survive to see another day." In this climate it can be hard to stay positively engaged and initiative tends to fade away. The lack of transparency regarding compensation is not ideal. Salaries seem to be all over the place without a clear structure, giving the impression at least that compensation is random or maybe just determined in part by who you know when you get hired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is often hard to reconcile the ideas expounded as the school's mission versus the day-to-day reality. This makes some of the rhetoric regarding "changing the world via design" seem more like a sales pitch. There are indeed programs here trying to help the world in general but sometimes the reality of the school feels more like "money talks." The atmosphere for students seems very competitive, a visible percentage of students do extremely well with their careers, and tuition is very expensive.

I worked at Art Center College full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It is the best school in the world for the study of Communications, Photography, Environmental and Transportation Design.

    Cons

The students. They are of the highest caliber and of the truest dedication to their career. It is indeed a challenge to help them get on with their career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Of course, it helps if the faculty is well trained and at the top of their game. No one should teach at that school unless they have spent at least ten years working steadily in their chosen field of endeavor. They must be able to communicate effectively, plan their projects so that the students not only performs to peak but also can articulate not only what they have done but how it was done and to what end.

    Pros

Very interested in personal growth since it is in education. Loved my coworkers. Still go back to visit my coworkers frequently.

    Cons

I don't have anything negative to say. HR treated me wonderfully, as did staff. I would love to work here again. People are very cultured and can introduce you to so many new things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. Very concerned with team's well-being, and have never been treated better.

    Pros

Good students doing interesting work all the time that's on display all around the campus. Good instructors. Nice treatment for some workers.

    Cons

Egos everywhere. Nasty work culture. Nice treatment for some workers. What you see on the surface is not the real work place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give some of your millions back to the school, retire, and let the school get some fresh people. Too much dead wood.
