I have been working at Art Van Furniture part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Thorough sales training if youve never had official training before
varies store to store, but our store had a unique family atmosphere within our sales team
    Good benefits for full time
Only recommend to people who know sales is their "thing". You have to be able to read people.

    Cons

The commission rates have not risen with minimum wage over the years since it was put into place. Potential to make alot of money but in order to do that you really have to hit the bricks on your days off anf cultivate your own business coming in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adjust the sales commission to be comparable with similar sales positions.

    Pros

Great pay, minimum 50 hours/ week, nice benefit programs.

    Cons

Lots of favoritism, no life or time to spend all the money you make, feels like you wake up and start working again before you realize you ever went home to sleep.

    Pros

Nice showrooms to work at and other sales staff for the most part friendly. Good benefits for full time employees, full one hour lunch and weekly paycheck(deducted from your commission)

    Cons

If you plan to succeed in this job you will have to basically live there. Hours are long and many times unproductive. Very hard to catch up with draw if you fall behind on sales for any time at all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the up system to be a bit more fair to all sales people, not just the top sellers and maybe give a little more training.

I worked at Art Van Furniture full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

benefits offered, food offered on occasion, few honest salespeople

    Cons

The company teaches you in training how they want you to conduct business, but it is completely different once you get on the sales floor. Management constantly bends the rules for certain salespeople and it is not even close to a level playing field for all the sales staff. At times, managers belittled sales staff and were very confrontational. Constantly witnessed verbal and physical altercations amongst sales staff as a result. It was a never-ending soap opera almost every single day. Sales staff paid on delivered merchandise, which meant a rude customer service rep or delivery mistake could cost a salesman a sale. Customer Service was an absolute joke since most reps were underpaid for the headaches they had to deal with and did not get affected financially if an order got canceled. Hours were way too long and never really set. If you are an honest salesperson (they do exist!), it is hard to make a living working for this company. By far, this was the WORST working experience in my professional career and I was very dissatisfied with entire experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice what you preach in training like honesty and integrity. The management played favorites to the top sellers since they help them reach their bonuses. The main issue was that the Top 5 sellers at this store were liars, cheats, and thieves not only to fellow employees, but to the customers. Management knew this, but looked the other way. Also, either do a better job with recruiting for Customer Service positions or pay them more money because most of the staff could careless about their job or the customers.

I have been working at Art Van Furniture full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, great people, fun, exciting, fast and every changing environment, and very talented people on staff.

    Cons

Most of the time you will only be a shell of who you really are. Long drives combined with long hours and poor planning, which includes up to four managers opening the store on the same day, all driving long distances and some working 14 hour days, which shows a lack of concern, consideration and care from upper management. The company SOP for work hours needs to be changed to address managers driving longer distances. Fix it!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great leadership includes a duty to lead and a duty to care. Your managers are leading people who feel sorry for them - that's a bad situation. You are aware of the negatives that surround sleep deprivation, yet you show no concern for your managers and their ability to stay fresh; you will never be great leaders until you correct the problem.
