I have been working at Art Van Furniture

    Pros

Good place to get full-time work and to gain experience in a warehouse.

    Cons

Poor management, they make bad decisions and usually are pretty uneducated due to the lack of promotions depending on education and more on seniority.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote people that attend school or have a degree before you promote someone just because they've been in the company longer.

I worked at Art Van Furniture full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Management team and co-workers are friendly and down to earth.
Equipment is well maintained, and pulled out of service if it violates DOT regulations
    On-site mechanic
Minimal traffic on the roads, and super easy to drop and hook at the showrooms because of the hours run
Uniforms provided are enough for a week of wear
    40 hour, 4-day work weeks.
    Drivers are listened to

    Cons

Start time at 11 p.m. Having never worked a shift of this hour before, I didn't know what to expect....I couldn't hack it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wasn't there long enough to offer any valid input. I liked what I experienced while there, though.

    Pros

Solid growing company, lots of business!!!! Beautiful environment ever changing! Majority of people are so fun to work with! Management is sharp and supportive. No limit to earnings, On target to earn 6 figures this year!

    Cons

Be prepared to work long hours. Our computer programs are aniquaited. You must have talent and sales ability to make this work! I work with about 15 associates (approx 7 part time) 5 top associates earn 60-100k. Need more flexibility with schedules. Weekly reports required.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Chicagoland needs a base pay. We need bigger incentives like trips, give aways like ipads, furniture, cash etc.!!! Step it up, this isn't Michigan.

    Pros

you get an hour lunch..and occasionally you get free food
get excellent training by a great trainer on how to sell
most of your co workers are amazing people willing to help you out
they offer profit sharing if you last long enough-very few companies still do this

    Cons

    constantly being over worked
its possible to make more as a part timer then full time
    blame you when its slow
since you work on a draw every hour you don't sell what they're giving you, you get deeper into the hole
you only make real money if you work in michigan, since this is a michigan based company
    outdated computer systems
expect to work around 48 hrs +
even though you're on break you will be told to get off even though their are no customers in the store
this is a night time store, so expect business toward the last hour they're open.
everyone works all day Saturday even though business doesn't start to pick up around 3. so you're typically 50 dollars in the hole before you get our first customer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

treat people like human beings. Stop over working them when their is no business
implement split shifts like you promised

    Pros

The girls behind the counter are great. Very friendly and welcoming. Make working there less awful.

    Cons

Managment stinks, they are extremely one sided and favor certain employees. Long hours and no gratitude for what the employees do. Management is unprofessional and talk about other employees behind their back. Not a company I'm proud to formerly work for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop talking about employees and act professional. Do the job your hired to do. Stop favoring employees and listen to what your team is telling you.

I have been working at Art Van Furniture part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Thorough sales training if youve never had official training before
varies store to store, but our store had a unique family atmosphere within our sales team
    Good benefits for full time
Only recommend to people who know sales is their "thing". You have to be able to read people.

    Cons

The commission rates have not risen with minimum wage over the years since it was put into place. Potential to make alot of money but in order to do that you really have to hit the bricks on your days off anf cultivate your own business coming in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adjust the sales commission to be comparable with similar sales positions.
