Learned a ton and co-workers were really friendly

    Intern (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

Pros-Can learn about different specialized areas such as structural, mechanical, plumbing if you actually took the time to ask about how they go about their job
    -friendly environment
    -interesting projects

Cons-kept you busy with work that was mainly routine
-pay was ok as intern but heard its average of below once employed full time

Advice to Senior ManagementI understand as interns management cant invest too much time because they know there is a chance that interns may not come back but in my experience I rarely spoke to my manager and mainly worked hand in hand with regular employees or senior engineers. There should be a better level of communication between the two and allow the young engineer know what to do to become successful or how to manage one day and of course how to get paid better because ultimately thats eveyones goal

The job is stable and the paycheck is enough

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsThe culture is very comfortable and pretty fun. Arup makes an effort to keep its employees happy though food and office amenities. 3 weeks paid vacation, 2 weeks sick time, plus about 10 other holidays.

ConsThe compensation is not what i think it should be (meaning i'm underpaid). definition of milestones required for advancement are vague at best. Mid-level management has no power. Principles make all raise decisions, even for the underlings they may not interact with. this is a serious disconnect that leaves the young engineers at the mercy of their managers to convince the principles to promotes the younger engineer and give them raises. some of these managers don't seem to understand the structure leaving young engineers dissatisfied with lack of raises and promotions.

Advice to Senior ManagementLess amenities and more pay. I don't need false praise, i want to know what i need to improve on to speed up my advance of ascent to the top.

Great place to work at, with some rough edges

    Electrical Engineer (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

    ProsLow turnover.
A lot of long-term staffs, so people like to work for the company.
Excellent support from the management team on Work-Life balance.
    Easy commute to multiple offices.
Friendly, respectful and stimulating work environment
Get-together lunches and after hour social events are encourage.
Senior staffs are encourage to use laptop and are given one if requested.
Central Service (IT, Finance, HR, Facilities) staffs are friendly and have good respond time.
HR representatives are knowledgeable and easy to talk to.
    Excellent time-off benefits.
Encourages staffs to stay safe and healthy, through seminars, gym memberships and sporting events.

ConsWork may requires long hours and work weekends commitment.
May works on multiple projects with similar deadlines.
Deadlines are frequent and sometimes unrealistic.
Very little downtime between projects (you will be starting on another project before you even finish your current one).
Travel may be required, where you will be away from home for a few days.
Not many people can say they have time to go on vacation.
Can easily burn out as a junior engineering staff.
A lot of long-term staffs, so promotions and moving up to management level is very hard for newer staffs.
Staff will be volunteered by managers for tasks but do not communicate the benefits to picking up the tasks.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up with the great work. There are many ways to improve.
Encourage staffs to take vacation to avoid burn-outs.
Do a better job at resourcing to avoid staff working a lot of overtime hours, which leads to burn-outs and leaving the company.
Encourage staffs to attend training sessions, not just in their respective field, but other trades as well.

    OK, Not for Everyone Though

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsArup is a big company where there is a lot of room for growth. It is a very friendly work enviornment.

ConsSometimes the "extra" stuff that the company does can be annoying. Its not always about getting work done. And it can be a waste of time.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management needs to figure out a structure that makes sence. Because the nonsense that they call a structure isnt working.

    Fun Group, Interesting work

    Sustainability Intern (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsA great group of people. Very interesting and highly visible projects. Loved getting drinks afterword. Learned a lot about sustainability consulting as an industry.

ConsThere was not enough free food in the kitchen. A well stocked kitchen makes everyone happy. Also they didn't have a desk for me at first.

Positive experience, but glad I moved on.

    Consultant (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

Prosgood brand within the engineering space, good development opportunities for those willing to stick with the slow pace of progression

ConsTope management take too long to make decisions and essentially look after themselves during a downturn. need pay more junior employees better to keep the top talent.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook after your graduates

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Great place to intern

    Intern (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsExcellent work. I was able to get involved in hands on projects at a very exciting stage in their building development. There was also a very good office culture where everyone worked very closely together.

ConsAs an intern, there was a period where my direct boss was sick and during that time, I didn't have anything to do as the internship was lead purely through her.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on a more comprehensive internship program for younger students.
