I have been working at Asbury Park Press part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you know how to put two sentences together, you can stretch and explore your writing potential. There are a couple of decent editors who will help sharpen your prose and make you a better reporter. No story is off limits as long as it has appeal to the local readers. You are also close to the NYC market, so your work will be noticed more often than if you were out of state.

    Cons

The paper can get bogged down in corporate muck, with changing, even confusing, mandates. Cuts have increased work loads for everyone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the reporters and line editors more often and just don't throw things over the wall.

    Pros

Most people are nice. I found people really went out of their way to do their best, but unfortunately it was very seldom recognized by management.

    Cons

It was not a good feeling always wondering if you were going to get laid off.
Newspapers are a dying industry and quality is not their objective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
