I worked at Aspire Public Schools

    Pros

Decent pay, great coaching and agency given to teachers.

There are the standard long hours associated with all teaching jobs.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

The people you work with are friendly and welcoming. Also, the staff is very dedicated towards helping students achieve success.

    Cons

The kids are very disrespectful and there is not enough support from supervisors to handle difficult behavioral situations. More training needs to be provided.

    Pros

Aspire truly cares about finding a way for students to succeed. They will not stop until every student is achieving the same as other students. Their goal is equity, not equality.

    Cons

If you work this job, be sure you are not planning on having a social life. I worked about 14 hours Monday through Friday, and then I worked a full day and a half on weekends. If I did not work on our breaks, I felt like a slacker and would fall behind on planning for my students. Behaviors were also a huge difficulty with this job.

    Advice to Management

Work-life balance is something that would help with teacher retention. Positivity from principals would also improve teacher retention.

    Pros

Aspire's mission" college for certain" does a better job and Oakland Unified. Their mission should be "college for certain or we won't give you a diploma."

    Cons

Despite all of the PD you must attend there is little to no professional growth. Managers are often unable to provide supervision or guidance. The special education department pushes for full inclusion in general education classrooms but really underserves students with special needs. Aspire refuses to look at alternative more restrictive settings for students even if the parent/student ask for it. The organization talks about solutions but when it comes to an action plan they are unable to organize helpful systems. There is not enough behavioral support for students that need it. As a result the students that try to learn are constantly disrupted and unable to learn effectively. Students are taught to take tests not grow into productive members of society.

    Advice to Management

STOP TALKING ABOUT CHANGE AND DO SOMETHING!

    Pros

Students always come first at Aspire. Teachers and administrators do their best to serve the students through consistent feedback all around.

    Cons

Sometimes, the feedback provided on instructional practices and procedures turns into criticism, which can come across as negative, and hardly fosters a feeling of family among the staff. If the staff doesn't feel welcomed into the Aspire family, it can lead to burnout.

    Pros

The Benefits are excellent and they make up for the slightly lower pay by increasing paid time off and better benefits.

    Cons

It's becoming corporate very quickly and there is a fear that it will loose it's small business feel and employees will become expendable and less valued.

    Pros

Colleagues are amazingly talented, very dynamic work environment with many opportunities to do new things, thoughtful processes for making change, great vacation policy

    Cons

The work is challenging (not really a con, but something worth understanding), it takes a while to understand the rhythm and ways of being, there's always more to learn and know. Can be frustrating when you're new.

    Advice to Management

Keep moving in the same direction!
