    Positive Outlook

I worked at Associated Students (Cal Poly) part-time

    Pros

Fun, friendly staff, and plenty of clients. Large facility with all the equipment you need and many amenities.

    Cons

Training prices are a little too low, leading to many clients that are just not serious about training. When they don't get results, it reflects poorly on the training staff.

    Advice to Management

Keep on keeping on. It is a brand new facility and you are figuring it out as you go. Great people will make a great facility.

  2. Student Manager Position

I worked at Associated Students (Cal Poly) part-time

    Pros

ASI is one of few companies that offer a student Manager position for current students. This position is a fantastic opportunity for growth and allows students to gain valuable hands on experience in leadership and management.

    Cons

Being a Student Manager means you are on call 24/7, which can be tough considering all other obligations the typical student may have. Often times I would be studying and would receive a call saying that my employee cannot make it into work. It was then up to me to drop what I was doing and fill that shift.

    Advice to Management

Allow student managers to take major responsibility by Spring Quarter. By then they are very well trained and are able to gain hands on management experience.

    Pros

Since it is an organization for students, they accommodate most students' schedules. It is a good place to work if you just need extra spending money.

    Cons

Unfortunately, shifts do not align with Cal Poly classes, so a class at the wrong time can block an employee into unfavorable shifts for an entire quarter. There is little opportunity for growth. Out of hundreds of student employees, only a handful will become student managers.

    Advice to Management

If you want to say that ASI provides "real world" professional development to students, state how. The employees are not professional, and there are no incentives to foster a competitive environment.

  5. Student Employment

    Pros

The company works extremely well with their student staff's school schedules. They only have three hour shifts to compensate for weird class schedules. The pay is pretty high for a student staff position on campus. The company and environment are fun and enjoyable. The team is very diverse and make up a strong team of student staff.

    Cons

Management- Not educated well enough in fitness. Focus on cardio equipment when the majority of the clientele utilize the resistance training area.

    Advice to Management

    Promote from within

    Pros

Very flexible with you're school schedule and willing to provide you with opportunities to learn and grow.

    Pros

Great environment to learn the ins and outs of working on a team and taking initiative on your own projects. Lots of freedom to try new things and really be creative; great higher ups who listen, and want the best for you.

    Cons

Truly none. Take advantage of the freedom to do what you want.

    Pros

Working for Cal Poly in any capacity is a great experience. Great management, great co-workers, thorough training, fair reviews, employee appreciation and a snappy uniform.

    Cons

ASI doesn't furnish it's own video or photo equipment, like the other sectors of Cal Poly do, so the students are required to use their own equipment which doesn't allow for expansion of one's creative development, nor the growth of their marketing department.

    Advice to Management

I would like to see more advertising and involvement to the student body as a whole. The ASI events are mostly attracting the students who live or hang out by the UU. Since the entire student body pays ASI fees it would seem there would be a broader reach for the activities.
