    Fast paced environment

    Cons

Student run can mean every year is a new adventure, which is great! You just really need to know that going into it so you can enjoy the opportunity to be innovative and creative year after year. You always must be willing to troubleshoot! Always stay positive and you will enjoy your experience. A lot of personalities in the mix, but overall--GREAT people to work with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manuals for each department are HR's best ally and a new hire's best friend--straight forward expectations from the beginning were a MUST and gave me the most success. I loved working here (it helped that my values aligned with the corps) AS at Chico State is a wonderful opportunity for growth and learning

I have been working at Associated Students (Chico) part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Everything is student centered. They work great with your class schedule and understand that you are a student first. It's amazing to have the opportunity to be a part of a corporation that is ran by 18-25 year olds and that works to supplement what you are learning in the classroom to help you be the best professional you can be.

    Cons

Most jobs are for students only so balancing classes, work, clubs, and a social life is difficult, but not the fault of the company. Sometimes it seems like there is a hierarchy of jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micromanaging! Your students will resent you for it.

    Pros

Discount food. Room to move around. I enjoyed working here while I was a Chico. Your co-workers also go to school so everyone is down to earth.

    Cons

Its hot at the grill and if they are short staffed then you have to work harder. They make your clean a lot, but that's expected I guess. Closing is a chore compared to the other shifts.

I have been working at Associated Students (Chico) part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Easy access for student jobs,

    Cons

Very unfair business practices. Management is very unfair. One person in HR at Sutter Dining tells you one thing, then lies about it. Rate of pay is unfair in career staff, make as much as student. Do not promote from with in. Play favorites to certain employees. 2 managers are always on computer looking up unprofessional things and not helping staff at all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raises, get off computer, stop playing favorites to a lousey employee. Everyone is always in trouble and never encouraged.

    Pros

On campus job. No need for commuting. Friendly dining hall chefs!

    Cons

Prejudiced dining services junior supervisors. Great chefs. Chefs are the ones who keep this place running efficiently. Supervisors are never fair while dealing with students except for the top management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve cultural sensitivity of the supervisors. Fire prejudiced staff.

I have been working at Associated Students (Chico) full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It is a very student centric workplace and all of the people genuinely care about their success. The university campus and city of Chico is a real plus. Being able to work side-by-side with students and other staff members makes for an energetic atmosphere. The AS has many different facets to it so there is a wide variety of jobs.

    Cons

Some of the salaries are on the low side. Though you work on campus you don't get all of the state benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue to communicate openly.

    Pros

It's a great way to gain more knowledge about a certain area that you work in while developing connections with other students and future employers.

    Cons

A lot of the time there isn't a whole lot to do to keep yourself busy and there aren't many advancement opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your employees better and learn how to put them in certain situations that allows them to excel at what they do.

I worked at Associated Students (Chico)

    Pros

It's nice to have a job on campus and they will make some effort to work around your class schedule. Some of the positions allow students to get experience in fields that normally require you to get a degree first.

    Cons

If you are a student employee, be prepared to get blamed for mistakes made by the permanent staff. Student employees are treated as expendable and therefor little effort is made by many members of management to ensure that the student employees are receiving credit for their contributions. Many of the student employees put only enough effort into their jobs to avoid being fired because there is little to no chance of advancement within the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the student employees with a little more respect and do not count the hour when the student has to go to class as being their lunch break. Student employees shouldn't have to choose between their education and proper nutrition.
