I have been working at Association of Corporate Counsel

    Pros

There are some pretty dynamic and intelligent people working for this organization. The benefits are pretty good. The office is conveniently located in downtown DC.

    Cons

There is a lot of backstabbing amongst senior level management. Teams often speak poorly of one another and undermine each other's initiatives. There is very little room for advancement and the turnover rate is extremely high. Lower level staff members are not respected here and are often second guessed or treated as if they're incompetent. If you aren't a senior level manager you're going to be treated like an assistant. HR needs a little more support to do their jobs efficiently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in professional development for all staff. Provide HR with the training and support it needs. Please learn to treat all staff members with respect.

I have been working at Association of Corporate Counsel full-time

    Pros

Located in a convenient area in downtown DC. Offers good employee leave benefits, a professional scholarship opportunity and, for special circumstances, a telecommute opportunity. For example, in 2014 there were two telecommute contractors. Rhere are also chances to receive a bonus.

    Cons

No competitive pay for a non-profit, and work-life balance is strongly discouraged as a company policy. HR frequently leaks information or misses payments to lower-level staff. Poor top-down leadership and bullying emails from CEO create hostile and risky work atmosphere. The organization operates in silos, even with a small staff (less than 100 people). Very limited opportunities for advancement, and significant turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Extensive executive coaching could improve the hostile work atmosphere a great deal. Decrease bullying and tirades from senior management. Hire an objective company to provide competitive pay information on all positions. Provide training to help HR professionals.

I have been working at Association of Corporate Counsel full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Pretty good benefits, relaxed dress code, metro accessible, pretty good pay for a nonprofit, lower-level employees are good people

    Cons

Most employees at management level and above are lawyers. They are antagonistic, always playing power games, aggressive and treat non-lawyers like legal secretaries. I purposefully use "secretaries" because there is an old-school structure. VPs are openly honest in their skepticism of each other and not afraid to share their opinions, negative or positive. Organizational ethics are not found in a leadership that, in large part, provides the exact opposite of a moral compass.

Aside from the negative, hostile and aggressive workplace there is little room for growth. You are either support personnel or management. Once someone gets in as support and has the stability they need they rarely move or have a chance to advance at work. Also, the organization is growing in staff but office space is very limited.

Watch out. Several people were fired last year. It's a small nonprofit so when a handful of people leave - two of them VP's - it really makes an impact.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look at your organizational structure, how you treat your lower-level employees and the overall work environment. It makes me anxious to work there and everyone is so scared to speak up or make a move because they don't want to lose their job.

I have been working at Association of Corporate Counsel

    Pros

If you want to work at a place that is central and close to public transport then that is the only reason to work at the ACC.

    Their offices are modern.

    Cons

The senior management at this organization operates under a poorly structured model. It is a culture of fear, favoritism and antiquated views of the workplace. They don't even allow current employees to use LinkedIn for reviews under fear of termination (an email was actually sent to employees stating this). Their turnover rate is exceptionally high and there have been suits against this organization from employees.

I hope the new CEO can help to turn this organization towards more modern human resources and organizational practices.

    Pros

Close to metro that's all you get!

    Cons

Highly politicized entity for a small office of 60+ employees . Hard work will get you nothing but a two percent raise and not a single promotion or bonus. The Human Resource department cultivate an atmosphere of retaliation to such an extent that employees are scared to voice their opinion. I totally agree with the first reviewer as they are a handful of employees lawsuits over wrongful termination, discrimination and likes against this organization. Turnover is so high, more than a dozen employees left last year alone! Check the facts and make sure you know what you get yourself into.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop this culture of favoritism and recognize employees who have been working hard to get this company where it is.
