Pros
The company has good benefits
Cons
The lack of growth opportunities
Pros
Size of company enables direct exposure to senior level management.
Cons
Unfortunately, the company is not doing well in the current economic environment and has a history of doing many layoffs.
Advice to Senior Management
Figure out a way to handle reduction in force more planfully, so that multiple iterations are not necessary.
Pros
good benefits, medical starts day one, nice pension plan, good continuing education benefits, profitable company, nice pot-lucks, free parking, they have the cheese
Cons
focus is on results rather than values, micro management is the norm, the cheese is more important than color - gold - treating others like you want to be treated
Advice to Senior Management
Move past "get" (results at any cost) and "do" (behaviors used to get results) -- focus on "be" (being value base , as in human being, leveraging integrity, passion, goodness, purpose). Quit trying to change your employees and learn to leverage strengths - treat employees golden - as in the golden rule (not those with the gold rule, the other one).
Pros
Assurant is a great company. The management is constantly looking for new ways to make health insurance easier for people. It is a great atmosphere.
Cons
The new health care reform has made everything Assurant does change. It will continue to change for at least the next several years. Many people can find this irritating, but others may find it refreshing and quick paced.
Pros
Salary and benefits are decent. Located downtown Milwaukee. Building is well maintained. There are not too many positive things to say about Assurant Health.
Cons
Company does not care about employees. All jobs are being outsourced to India - even if you are still employed, it is only a matter of time. Your job is not safe - there are layoffs every 2-3 weeks. In the Legal Department, the General Counsel expects you to spend your free time doing charity work that looks good for her. Management in the legal dept is abysmal - semi-competent lawyers with zero management skills. Actually, "semi-competent" is too kind given the number of lawsuits the company is currently facing for their business practices (all approved by the legal dept).
Company does not care about their customers - just take a look at the number of lawsuits they are facing.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire some competent leaders - and try not to outsource them to India.
Pros
salary is better than industry average
Cons
worst place I have ever worked
people cannot be trusted
they will move your job to India
no flexibility for time off
Advice to Senior Management
There is no visible leadership at this company. I have never worked in such a dismal atmosphere and warn others to stay away
Pros
great benefits, good commission, base salary
Cons
tough market for insurance, not much opportunity for promotion unless in home office
Pros
The people were great to work with.
Cons
No room for getting promoted.
Pros
Great benefits, still has a pension plan, lots of vacation. Use to be cutting edge on insurance products, finding out what consumers want and providing it. Was a place filled with opportunity.
Cons
Senior management, though smart, have lost their way on treating employees right. With Don leaving and all of the downsizing, employees are treated as puppets. IT is not given the resources needed to complete what needs to be done for Reform, and stress and overtime are breaking down moral. No upward movement possible due to downsizing and everyone just waiting for their pink slip to arrive. Good people are leaving for more innovative and positive workplaces.
Advice to Senior Management
If you want success, focus on the people again. Say thank you when people work hard for our success. People will tell you what they need if you are willing to listen. Chose carefully who you are releasing and those you chose to stay. Those selected set the environment for everyone, and if you don't chose wisely, all the good people will go someplace else.
Pros
A fast paced challenging environment with a lot of latitude to self-manage projects. Respect for professionalism and competency. Strong business partnerships.
Cons
Worries about corporate restructuring feeds the rumor mill. Department cuts do not seem logical and restructuring leaves gaps in subject matter experts.
Advice to Senior Management
It is difficult to concentrate on our work when the future seems uncertain. I know you are retiring Mr. Hamm, and I wish you well. I am one of those that gave way to a stronger Assurant.
