I worked at Atkins as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good team work. Good environment. flexible work time. I like the idea of group meeting though it was not necessary always.

    Cons

Not good paid. no overtime work paying despite of the fact you have to stay late some times. some clerical problem that happened to me there.

    I worked at Atkins full-time

    Pros

Friendly, laid-back atmosphere, flexible work schedule

    Cons

Because of organization changes, people are laid off unexpectedly, The ones who are left are expected to pick up the extra work without being compensated. Expected to work overtime without compensation if you're a salaried employee, not enough work/life balance, pay is below average.

I have been working at Atkins full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

nothing that I have seen last few months

    Cons

I regret that I accepted Atkins offer a few months ago, my group manager who is an immature individual provided incorrect information to convince me.

Americas Director who seemed to be a nice person laid off. My colleague told me that she was back-stabbed by some of the managers who want to take her place. These managers were her best friends in the office.

Morale is very bad in the office, technical leads act as slave drivers in the office, everyone hates them in our group. I am looking forward to leaving this place asap.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

identify bad managers and technical leads and get rid of them.

    I worked at Atkins

    Pros

I got enough experience on my own to go out and get a much better job after leaving Atkins.

    Cons

Everything. This place is a sinking ship.

I have been working at Atkins full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    980 work shift
Good coworkers and office is good location.

    Cons

Good Ole boys network. If you are not from the UK, forget any type of growth.
Women need to stay away. Women are viewed as secretaries only.
They terminate people with no basis and wonder why we are all looking for a job. The group managers are very immature and do not have any leadership capability at all. The company needs to be closed down! I am leaving as soon as i can find another job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You will never have an American business here the way you treat people. You need to listen.

I worked at Atkins full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The health, etc. benefits in the US are good compared to other companies (not sure how they compare in other regions around the world).

    Cons

1.) As with many companies these days, employees are pushed hard, so the work-life balance is quite poor. 2.) In the US, the culture has changed a bit for the worse, since Atkins acquired PBSJ. 3.) The company doesn't seem terribly interested in retaining top talent. Instead, they definitely interested in pleasing the share-holders, and the bonus eligible staff, which has resulted in a few large reductions in force (layoffs), but I guess that goes with the territory.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thin out the upper, and middle management (in the US and elsewhere). In my opinion, there seems to be too many chiefs, directors, and regional this or that's drawing huge salaries, which prevents the people that actually do the work from getting cost of living raises (give the people that actually do the work deserved recognition, and compensation).

I worked at Atkins full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

At one time this was on its way to being a powerhouse in the World of FEMA as well as Transportation.

    Cons

Complete disrespect for clients as well as the employees who work very hard each and every day. Untruths seem to "Leak" to clients which put the PM and employees on the project look very unprofessional It seems that most of the experienced management have fled or have been cut to make numbers look better then they are

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not sure you can salvage what you have.

I worked at Atkins full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Adequate insurance and compensation. Austin staff, on the whole, good to work with.

    Cons

Almost everything else. Company management is constantly shifting management styles without allowing time for the "new" style to have a chance to take hold and work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

15+ year employee who worked nights, weekends, and on vacation for upper management, let go by a shift of power at the top and new president who wanted to teach my #2 in command boss a lesson. If you work at this company and have been there more than 10 years or are over the age of 40, find a new job fast. It's only a matter of time for you.
