Poor Management and Woeful IT - Sinking fast in Water Ops!

    Engineer (Current Employee) Epsom (Jamaica)

ProsFriendly office, convenient for the Town Centre and rail commute.

ConsNot really a design office. Competence of qualified Engineers questionable. Small projects and uninspiring work which is very repetitive. Can be left stuck doing the same thing with very little variety. Corporate in the extreme. No real focus from management on what the company is supposed to be doing engineering wise. More concerned about coming up with new strategies and hitting targets and billing clients, rather than providing engineering services that clients actually need. Hire and fire mentality.
IT systems are slow and archaic. Lots of unproductive time gets billed to the client. Middle management ineffective and live in a bubble and are not very aware. Higher management much the same but worse. In fact, they are not even visible but hide away and only appear when they announce another new strategy, as the last one didn't work, so they need to feel like they are doing something, usually a last minute reactionary effort at the expense of staff...ie: increasing working hours to reduce the selling price to clients in the hope it will win work and profit margins can increase. Too late you won't win work because nobody wants to give it to you.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs streamlining and needs to be more productive and accountable with less focus on the corporate and more focus on engineering and what the client needs. Salaries are not paid at correct market rate (too low) for those who are actually doing the work ie: Graduates, Technicians and Assistant Engineers. Those who are not doing much - which are the Senior Engineers and management do not earn their keep. This urgently needs reviewing.

    Lagging behind competitors

Senior Engineer (Former Employee) London, England (UK)

Pros1. Reputable firm to work for.
    2. Modern office facilities.
    3. Contact with large scale projects.

Cons1. Not the best workplace atmosphere.
    2. Teamwork non existent.
    3. Challenging projects are few and far apart.
    4. Salaries below industry average.

Advice to Senior ManagementTeam spirit within business units is very poor, difficult to deliver any outstanding projects if staff isn't fully engaged. Cooperation with other business units is scarce, no advantage is taken of the company's size and global reach.
New CEO seems to be on a good path to change the current state of things, but mid-management need to buy in.

Great on paper, nothing special in reality

Engineer (Former Employee) Epsom, England (UK)

ProsWell established, great flagship projects, overwhelming number of discipline areas, good name for the CV, general sense of being part of something big

ConsAwful leadership (particularly the CEO), no sense of direction, no "hedging" - leading to singular client/project wins being the make-or-break of entire departments, incapable of understanding when a project is beyond the company's abilities

Advice to Senior ManagementIncreasing the length of a working week can not be perceived as"improving" work-life balance

    Inexperienced Group managers!

    Consultant (Current Employee) Houston, TX

Prosgood benefits, okay work-life balance, 9/80 schedule is also good

ConsStructures, HSE and process groups are doing very bad, some of group managers threaten the staff to fire if they do not work hard or if they cannot bring projects to the company. Juniors are the slaves, and group managers are the slave drivers. No ethics at all, they fire staff in a minute. They mainly throw them out.

Group managers only deal with politics, they do not know how to manage the staff. My group manager lied to me at least five times.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe y should fire the group managers and bring in experience managers to manage the groups, especially HSE, Structures and Process groups.

    terrible Houston management!!

Senior Engineer (Former Employee) Houston, TX

Prosnice office, nice staff. Junior engineers are working very hard.

Consthe new management has no understanding of oil&gas industry, the director is under control of the commercial manager.

Office politics are killing this company

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease resign and leave this company alone!

"A good company who want to relax and spend their retirement." - An Engineer who has been with the company 3 years

    Engineer (Current Employee) Bangalore (India)

ProsRelaxed environment, flexible leaves, extraordinary pay for CAD technicians, no work for Managers & Team leaders(Senior staff), no need to worry about lay off, free vegetable lunch, lunch break for an hour.

ConsHR's from below average B-Schools and they think they are the top management (Please not that only the HR Director and HR head are from elite B-Schools), Engineers are under paid, Salary discrepancy between engineers in the same grade/level, absolutely no technical work or projects, UK dependent for projects, qualified engineers asked to do data entry related work, hardworking staff are not rewarded whereas staff who 'kiss up' have better prospects of promotions & salary hikes, Indian management not capable of taking any responsibility relating to projects and staff remuneration, there is no dispute management, staff harassment's are not handled & sorted, no appreciation for smart work but for staff who stays late and does nothing at the end of the day, Senior level staff lack technical capabilities, sympathy bonus & hikes for married staff(apparently married people are the only ones with actual expenditure), religion biased.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease be self dependent and it is important to be competitive in the Indian market during project bids, handle staff related issues well, reward staff who actually work hard, increase technical capability in the teams through training's and encourage good projects, recruit technically capable senior staff specific to the particular discipline, reduce dependency on the UK projects.
