Former Employee – worked at Atmel full-time for less than a year
Pros – I enjoyed the people and group that I worked with.
Cons – Company has a heavy emphasis on cutting costs. The processes are extremely manual and they should definitely upgrade some of their systems so employees can focus more on analyzing data rather than massaging it. I also thought that the overall culture was not great, people really kept to themselves.
Advice to Senior Management – Invest in some better systems
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Former Employee – worked at Atmel full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Some interesting technology now but not much on the horizon
Cons – No employee recognition. Any profit is used to buy more stock back or reward top level management. Many positions are underpaid. Technology is losing competitive strength.
Advice to Senior Management – Sell out to a competitor that can move the company forward, invest in new technology develop more products and try to keep more jobs in the US

Current Employee – been working at Atmel full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – they have a ping pong table and great location adjacent to san jose airport
Cons – Poor compensation, shaky leadership from the top down, lack of direction and opportunity, high turnover and layoffs in various depts the future looks uncertain and bleak...i overheard a senior executive speak in a very negative manner regarding his non-management people working below him in an extremely condescending tone which makes one ask why would you work at a place where upper management has no respect for their subordinates?
Advice to Senior Management – better communication
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Current Employee – been working at Atmel as a contractor for more than 3 years
Pros – Some good people, but depends on the group, new office finally has descent location and lack of management focus in some areas actually allow for a good challenge and training ground before heading to greener pastures.
Cons – Senior management's main concern is cost cutting, will pay poor salary and run circles around you when they can get away with it, complete lack of concern for employee (as of this writing, note company website does not elaborate on culture and benefits like many other companies do), much politics, spotty teamwork between departments delay ones efforts, some employees are reluctantly taking on the work of those who leave or are laid off with little recognition resulting in low morale and the inclination to jump once a new opportunity arises, does not promote flexible work programs although some groups allow it as they lack other incentives to keep talent, CEO micro-manages slowing down efforts that do not warrant it while killing creativity and damaging business relationships in favor of price shopping thus making certain accounts difficult to nurture for client-facing employees. No encouragement of continuing education and professional growth unless done at your expense and time. It's shareholder value at the expense of human value any day.
Advice to Senior Management – As we are poised to please Wall Street only and if someone wants to acquire the company, please do so already.

Current Employee – been working at Atmel full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – People are good to work with, benefits (insurance) is good.
Cons – No potential for growth. No acknowledgement of advanced degrees gotten while working for the company, no intent by the company to use that education. Pay isn't competitive, no training on any of the systems in use, terrible morale. Poor communication.
Advice to Senior Management – Reward more then the executive committee and directors when the company is doing good. Spend some time talking the the people that do that actual work of the company before you change or modify systems. You ever see "Undercover Bosses"?.... you guys could totally benefit by seeing what it's like to work for this company.

Current Employee – been working at Atmel full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – People I work with, compensation, Paid time off, ESPP, Managers can be flexible, amazing level of expertise that has kept the fab in Colorado Springs running successfully
Cons – Unless you're a friend of Steve Laub's( you'll know because you've been promoted to a VP) or you're in sales it feels like you're not valued. If you work to actually make products you expect your job to be outsourced. Unfortunately management doesn't have any interest in actually being a manufacturer.
Advice to Senior Management – Too many VP's and up who are taking tens of millions of dollars in compensation each year. Put money and resources into R&D and manufacturing in the U.S.
