I worked at Atotech USA full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, Not micro-managed, or not even managed at all. good pay, great benefits, very liberal control of expenses, expense reports are rubber stamped, so hey, go shopping. Safety is strongly implemented, as a means of control, and means of discharge of employment by subjective interpretation of "what is safe". Apple Iphone, & Dell Laptop are the electronic leashes. Communications are all accomplished by a wicked web of email threads. One full week of corporate orientation / training for new employees in Rockhill SC.

    Cons

Those in management are clueless how to manage capital equipment, warranties, and customer expectations. Engineers are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Employees are titled as engineers, but are not asked to do any engineering, but babysitting, and report overkill, & treated like a secretary. Absolutely NO Training on foreign made equipment, with poor documentation. Management lets the OEM of the equipment skate on their warranty obligations, and insist on the engineers pick up where the OEM failed to deliver according to contract documents. Engineers are constantly asked to solve problems that are not in the realm of their engineering discipline. Client (Intel), and German OEM treat the local engineers like dogs, condescending, with very little respect. Team spirit is non existent. Backstabbing, Gossip, Finger pointing, and wrongful blame. Bringing up issues, or observations where improvements could be made are considered "negative" and de-moralizing to the team. Innovated approaches, and world class training tools were brought to Atotech by experienced engineers, and adopted by the client, but the local management took credit as their own personal invention, and did not recognize the real innovators of the invention. Absolute disregard for hard work, and intellectual property theft. An absolute train wreck on how to run a ship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A wholesale re-configuration of the management is needed. Chemical engineers should not be in charge of capital equipment management, but chemical issues. Each plating tool should have a lead mechanical technician, electrical technician, and process technician. OEM's should be onsite, to finish the equipment until the client accepts the equipment. THEN the client needs to take ownership of the equipment, be trained on the equipment so they can manage their capital equipment. Training, Training, and more Training. There is a need for real team spirit building. Atotech has lost/fired more than 5 engineers in 2 years because of the short comings of its management. A chain of command is needed to insulate the workers in the trenches from the abuse by the client / German OEM. The management should team (partner) with its workers, instead of using them as scapegoats on issues with the client.

I worked at Atotech USA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Atotech, subsidiary of Total SA, offers relatively good perk compared to its competitors. Moreover, it is easy to maintain good work/life balance when you work in Headquarter. When you work in HQ, you don't receive much pressure from customers, makes you pretty detached from what's happening in the region.

    Cons

Often management approach is very top down. Good communication skills and assertiveness are very necessary in order to survive in the environment. As engineer, you don't have much to say, even though you have a clear picture of what's happening in the real world/ customer site.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Different people needs to be incentivized differently. I think management should steer away from top-down approach. Management should also recognize potential employee very early and further develop them with training/ education.
Not all managers have good leadership skills. Further assessment on leadership skill of the top management is very important.
