    Pros

The people at August Home are great to work with and many have been with the company for over 20 years

    Cons

The company is going through some financial issues and had to let people go last year

    Pros

There used to be a great group of people who worked there but most have been terminated. Unfortunately the ones left are quite uninspired.

    Cons

There is only one opinion there and that is the owners. All you have to do is look at website and it's nothing but photos and history of "Don". No creativity left because everyone just waits for him to make decisions. Revenues reduced by half over the last 4 years as a result of not keeping up with technology.

    Advice to Management

    Retire

I have been working at August Home Publishing full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The atmosphere is one of professionalism and pride in one's wok. Employees are encouraged to try new ideas and seek out new solutions... The company CEO believes in "Turning a problem into a friend."

    Cons

The publishing industry has fallen on hard times all over, and AHP is no exception. The economy has forced us to make some cuts recently, but the outlook is hopeful.

I have been working at August Home Publishing full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Nice people, overall friendly environment.

    Cons

Long standing upper management lacks skills to expand the company, which is why they are now have hard financial times and laying more and more people off every year. They can't seem to move forward into new areas the consumer is wanting, Don puts his personal desires before the customers needs.

    Advice to Management

The bus has left the station without you Don. Everyone (including your customers) is well beyond Magazine 2.0 and have left you and August Home behind. If your managing editors and Woodsmith exec art director dinosaurs can't adapt then they need go extinct.

    Pros

August Home is a great place. For the publishing industry as a whole, the last few years have been especially tricky, and I think August Home has done a great job staying relevant - something other companies are struggling with. The work environment is fantastic, and considering the owner is involved in basically every decision, things actually do get done and come out at a pretty great quality.

    Cons

Sometimes things are slow to get done, because the owner is so involved in all aspects of the company. His ideas are good, and quality is always good, but pulling the trigger is sometimes difficult so there is some 'hurry-up-and-wait', but where isn't there?

  7. Good place to get experience

    Pros

Overall, a good place to get your feet wet. The work itself is excellent exeperience.

    Cons

The top leadership is poor. Communication is poor. HR is not helpful to the employers, but acts on the whim of the owner/CEO. Dysfunctional.

    Advice to Management

Get someone to run the company who doesn't own it, and who knows how to lead and deal with conflict.
