I worked at Austin Industries full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I can't think of any good reasons to work here.

    Cons

Management is the worst, micro-managing. You can't even go to the restroom without getting written up. They have installed cameras and I have heard microphones at all the exit doors, can you say Big Brother is watching. Employees who have been there for over 15 years are leaving and not looking back. Huge turnover in the Deer Park office of Austin Industrial, Inc.
Corporate office in Dallas, TX does not care enough to question why the huge turnover of employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of current President of Austin Industrial, he is bringing this company down. Listen to the non manager employees and their concerns. Realize that you had loyal employees working for you, but the atmosphere and direction of the company is not employee friendly.

    Pros

Salary and ESOP were great, but the company culture is acidic! And the President of Austin Industrial is the worst leader that I have ever encountered!

    Cons

No support from upper management. Most acrid working environment of my life - stay away, unless you want to work for a sweat shop that does not care one lick about you!!!!!! All they care about is keeping their contracts with the refineries!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop touting your safety record and actually start caring about the people that work for you... oh, and obey the law.

Types of construction projects offer a lot of different opportunities for field personnel. Safety is highly valued and promoted.

    Cons

Great divide between field and office personnel. Executive management doesn't interact with support departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More timely and honest communication.

    Pros

Nice to be part of an ESOP - it reflected well on most employees decisions

    Cons

Area managers are TOTALLY bottom line driven - if their #'s dont work watch out - layoffs will be coming - doesnt matter what your position is - even if your on their local executive group they take of their good "O" boys that have been there the longest and dump those that contribute the most

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Nice bosses and coworkers. Employee owner mentality. For a contractor having a 401K and health insurance is nice. Raises based on merit. Good safety training.

    Cons

Bad health insurance, will reject a lot of things until you argue about it. No room for advancement within company. Zero PTO for the 1st year, only 5 days every year after.

I worked at Austin Industries as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The pay is decent. no other comments.

    Cons

They are a contract company so there is no benefits for short term work, they treat you poorly from start to finish.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At least treat potential employees and employees with respect- you will keep the more talented employees. Update company job boards online and allow people to call in and let hiring managers know you are interested. I have 18 years experience. Your office is 60 miles from my home. I would work more jobs for Austin if it wasn't such a hassle. This is at the Deer park office.

I worked at Austin Industries full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Deep bench in field personnel, and project management.
    Employee Stock Ownership.
    Employee focused.
    Integrity.

    Cons

Sometimes, in the current era, overly focused on revenue and profit, at the expense of being customer-focused.
At times, it has been difficult to advance your career at Austin (in part due to the deep bench pro listed above).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on customer satisfaction, and return to the company's rich history of innovating.
