I worked at Austin Peay State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I loved the people I worked with and management was always helpful and kind. They are also lenient when you need time off.

    Cons

I didn't agree with the way some things were done, and many of the tutors felt like we couldn't do anything about it. Students tended to use tutors to get a slip that said they attended a session and then blamed you when their grades were bad. Management supported its tutors for the most part. Online submitters will send in the same paper 100 times until you fix every single error, and you don't have the power to tell them you won't review their paper again (and eventually you see a paper so many times that you've written it at this point and it's probably plagiarism).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My biggest advice would be to find a way to monitor online submissions and then set a limit to how many times one paper can be reviewed by our tutors. We are there to help students, yes, but it does NOT help them to point out every error and tell them how to fix it. They learn nothing that way. They do the bare minimum of work because we do it for them, and then they get rewarded with a grade they could not have gotten if they did some of the editing work themselves. Many (I would say most) of the students do not abuse our system that way, but it happened enough to be a frustrating issue that led me to consider quitting before I graduated.

I have been working at Austin Peay State University full-time

    Pros

We have a lot of really great programs in place to keep faculty active in research and learning. Our students are down-to-earth. I love them! I love the opportunities and benefits I've been given there. I've been offered other jobs, but have not taken them because they didn't offer me what I had at the Peay.

    Cons

We rely too heavily on adjunct labor. Because of our location, we don't always get great interview pools and have hired people we have regretted and it's very hard to get rid of them due to the tenure process. It makes me absolutely abhor my department. Our pay during the school year is a joke compared to comparable schools.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need to find a way to make it easier to recruit top students in surrounding schools.

    Pros

Working with faculty, staff, and students was fun. Also, learning how to create brochures, flyers, and other print orders.

    Cons

Not much room to move up. Some other departments demand need by dates without much notice. Not neccesarily the media departments fault though.

    Pros

Not too small,Not too big. Great college community.

    Cons

University focuses a lot on test scores and not so much on life after college. Would love to see more focus on what students are going to do after graduation. Resume building, mock job interviews, and more than the once a semester job fairs.

I have been working at Austin Peay State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The university's leadership, faculty, and staff work tirelessly to innovate for student success. Whether in registration, advising, teaching, data collection and analysis, engaging students outside the classroom, or community engagement and development, Austin Peay's employees ceaselessly explore bold, innovative practices with one goal in mind: student success.

    Cons

The state contributions are so low that there's no money to do anything. The employees accomplish miracles with the sweat off their backs. The campus linchpins are visibly overtaxed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Further integrate the faculty and staff and with other TBR institutions to foster collaborative-funding opportunities. Train and include the faculty and staff in fundraising.
