I have been working at Australia and New Zealand Banking (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work life balance. You can resign and get promoted.

    Cons

Nobody wants to work and the processes are very slow. Works similar to Indian government. There is no promotion policy. You get promoted when you resign.

    Advice to Management

This is not a retirement home where you get paid. Start working!

Akin to a government job - dull and unrewarding

I worked at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible working arrangement, good office location and building, opportunities to work on different projects

    Cons

Zero recognition of good work and zero opportunities for promotions, poor quality of senior and middle management, low motivation amongst colleagues, serious lack of decision making ability, overcrowded workplace with too many employees in manager and above HR grades.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to separate the wheat from the chaff, i.e., the good workers from the bad. Reward effort and quality of output rather than take the (relatively) safe approach of maintaining decorum and playing it safe. Kick out the incompetent and "excess" employees, empower employees.

  6. Poor culture and management - only care about profit and kpi margins

I have been working at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Making good friends, professional working environment, 'cultural days'

    Cons

Bureaucracy, red tape, profits ahead of ethics EVERY TIME.

    Advice to Management

Stop pretending to care about your staff - actually CARE about their well-being, instead of focusing predominantly on whether or not every kpi and target is being smashed. Be open and HONEST with your staff about the bigger decisions taking place which concern their future with the company, and you will gain much more loyalty from them.

I worked at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Salaries are excellent for Senior Manager and above. Good redundancy packages for managers and below.

    Cons

No job security, offshoring as much as they possibly can. Very meeting based culture. Poor quality of leadership. Staff banking benefits aren't as good as what you can get at other banks as a regular customer. Bell curve performance review system means you're unlikely to do well unless you are on senior management's radar. Unbelieveable amounts of bureaucracy, almost impossible to get things done,.

    Advice to Management

Try and actually improve your service rather than just blindly offshore jobs to reduce costs.

    Pros

Decent market rate pay. Nothing else to comment on unfortunately

    Cons

No career planning, no performance objectives, undefined career or role responsibility. Antiquated core systems and lack of management support to seriously overhaul core platforms

    Advice to Management

Peer comparisons of employee and talent management. Invest heavily on your people and infrastructure for the long run.

I worked at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time

    Pros

Keen to make it in Asia. Weren't burnt too badly by GFC.

    Cons

Lack the senior management talent or experience to play with the big guys in Asia.

    Advice to Management

Get out of Asia. Sack anyone who has been there more than 10 years. In denial about failure of Asian growth strategy. ROE in Asia = 10%, will never improve.

I have been working at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time

    Pros

Great people, often willing to share the load, yet the best and brightest do not stay long. Recruitment is doing something good, but retention seems lacking.

    Cons

Large amount of senior management politics; lack of clear focus on infrastructure; manual processes

    Advice to Management

Place your money where your mouth is - institute policies which budget for strong R&D and infrastructure development based on a percentage of revenue, and hire people to relook into policies and workflow processes to streamline and cut out manual intervention. Pool divisional resources rather than having divisions within the same country run with different infrastructure silos.
