I worked at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Still hiring. Some growth. Good vision.

    Cons

    Dealing with old-school bureaucrats legacy.
    Psychopathic management.
Lip-service to "Values" but sluggish execution.
    Lack of strategic view.
Australian head-office slow to adapt to change.
New Zealand office is so insular, even the Australian office hates it.
Asia may have some new ideas to offer, but no budget to pursue it.
Offshoring offices (hubs) are run like BPOs - but everyone calls them "banks" - except they aren't. (Heard of the term KPO?)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to vision. Get back to values.
Retire all these bureaucrats and politicians who are running your business to the ground.

I worked at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Culture - Experience differ depending on which part of the organisation you work in (I've worked in 3 different sections) and the people you work with but I found that the overall culture is great (credit to hard work laid down by previous CEO). Current culture is highly performance/target-focused so creates a bit more stress but nonetheless still ok place to work in.

Managers - I was lucky that most of my managers were open to ideas and will give opportunity for you to grow which I think is excellent. They were also very flexible with work arrangements.

    Cons

Risk-Averse - they have made a few innovative accomplishments in the past few years, but the overall risk-averse culture still exists so things tend to take a long time to process (e.g., technology projects, etc) which makes you feel that the company could really be more efficient than it is now. Having said that, as long as something is signed off and passed down from upper management (very often the case), it gains traction really quickly.

Silo Culture - if you have a brilliant idea for another department, don't ask your manager if you can go help them out, they will think that you're out of your head (there are other channels to voice your opinions though).

People - this could happen in any other company and being a large company, there are very competent people as well as not very competent people that you may have to work with. You have to be able to deal with the fact that someone who may be getting paid more than you and/or is at a more senior position knows nothing about what they're supposed to be doing and you are doing a lot more work than they are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While chasing after those ambition goals, don't forget to take care of your employees.

I have been working at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Completive Salary, Good environment and good opportunities.

    Cons

Worklife can get stale at times, does not offer a culture or employee satisfaction that is offered by the many well known tech companies (but there is a drive to change that), strong conservative suit and tie culture the higher you progress in the organisation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it more appealing to the younger generations and it will pay back in dividends.. Offer more then an above average salary.

I have been working at Australia and New Zealand Banking as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Great for personal growth and learning as you are able to learn things from ground level up, it was good training and exposure to the finance industry

    Cons

I felt that there could be more bonding activities, friendlier environment between the teams as everyone was caught up doing their own work. Would be great for the company culture if there were more activities to engage everybody in

I have been working at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Opportunities - exposed to numerous areas of the bank and senior leaders. Make of it what you will. Super regional push.

    Cons

Typical bank culture. You must be self reliant and energetic. If you fall into a slump no one will pick you up.
Technology blows. Numerous systems that don't talk to each or can't cut the data as required. Lots of manual spreadsheets to patch the shortfalls.

Former Employee - Manager in Melbourne (Australia)

I worked at Australia and New Zealand Banking full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Rewards employees well with salary, bonuses, sharing in large profits.

    Cons

Rewards the wrong employees well. Like most large companies the cultural and ethical policies are there to protect management and not truly develop a high performing organisation. Toxic behaviour and bullying are rife and a good proportion of the employees are either incompetent or lazy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop paying lip service to policies designed to improve culture and actually reward those who foster collaboration, quality and high performance rather than force management to be so competitive internally.
