I worked at Australian Bureau of Statistics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Many different and interesting projects to work on with some input into what you want to do. Most coworkers were great and happy to give help or advise. Low stress environment. This is specifically for the ICT Stream.

    Cons

A few dinosaurs in management positions who are not up to date with modern technology and have unmeetable expectations. 90% of jobs are in Canberra.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure managers know about what they are trying to manage.

I have been working at Australian Bureau of Statistics full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Reputation of working at the ABS carries you far and wide. You can deal with a huge range of complex problems across a vast range of subject matters... and learn how a lot of things should be done (see cons below!).

    Cons

Senior management is listless and unrealistic, blindly implementing top-down projects that don't work on the ground because they haven't done their due diligence. Guess who pays for that? Many clockwatchers and people who really can't do their own job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage underperformance better. Understand the core business. You need to spend money to save money.

I worked at Australian Bureau of Statistics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Minimal workload
Has its own bar for employee with cheap drinks on Thursdays

    Cons

Rife with nepotism that promotes people ill-experienced with their posititions based on who they know.
Senior Management are often based on tenure with the organisation rather than leadership skills or knowledge.
Very siloed culture so work in one area might never be seen in another area, no matter how relevant.
Culture of prejudice against non-Canberra based employees and work.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

Great people & conditions; Excessive bureaucracy and management buck passing

I have been working at Australian Bureau of Statistics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Great working arrangement: reasonable hours, flexible arrangements (public sector generally does this well)
    - great people: very supportive, friendly, willing to help & lacking in competitive politics

    Cons

    - Ridiculous bureaucracy for a medium sized organization: slow decision making
    - Management often unwilling to take responsibility for decisions: gets passed up the corporate chain / passing the buck
    - Lack of funds and stringent means innovation is difficult / slow
    - Technology ahead in some areas like collection methods, security but lagging far behind in others like website & Lotus Notes is a virus that should be promptly inoculated.
    - productivity in some teams low: not driven enough

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain current quality standards, less formalized communication channels, more regular discussions, more rapid decision making, less paternal BS: honesty and frankness would be respected.
