I have been working at Australian Government (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You can easily move from one dept to another and get very different experiences in indifferent places. As expected with public service, very flexible environment and good working conditions.

    Cons

Varying quality of managers and supervisors. Can be very difficult if you strike a not so good manager. Relatively few options for career beyond a certain level (compared with private sector).

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Australian Government full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Working on nationally important projects and issues that help people. Canberra is a fantastic place to live.

    Cons

Your level of work satisfaction will depend a lot on the quality of your manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recruit better managers. Find out what their staff think about them, not just what superiors think they know - there are a lot of people who are great at selling themselves well to their upper management but who don't manage their staff or projects well. Don't use communications as just a publishing unit at the end. Get a good communications person and you will get a good strategist who can really add value to your policy agenda.
