Pros8:00-4:30 work days with 1 hour lunch
Stable job
Good benefits and 401K, Christmas bonus, Incentive Bonus
Bonuses for completing classes for designations
OT available usually

Cons-Cannot "think outside the box" - stuck in the 70s
-Managment poorly trained for their positions, promoted within and thrown into the position with no training
-SLOW to even THINK of providing newer software, benefits, flex time, etc.
-Unless you have at least bachelors, you are not looked at or respected the same
-Promotions are hap-hazard...mostly it's "time", not by merit neccessarily. ALso depends mainly on managament and if they will work hard to get you promoted.
-Salary could be better
-The line "doesn't transfer problems" is a complete lie. If you complain loud and long enough, you will get transferred or promoted. Not the workers who deserve these opportunities.
-Pushes futher education too much, almost holds it against you if you cannot take these extra classes.

Advice to Senior Management-Train your new managers.
-Ditch the "sign in" if people are late, and put the responsibility on the managers. There are days I never see or hear my manager. I could stay home and they would have no clue.
-Repect everyone, no matter what their education is, or if they've done any classes.
-Focus on the positive workers, and quit wasting energy on the negative/problem workers.

ProsAuto-Owners is an excellent company. It's greatest assest are the people. The job is extremely stable. There area lot of young people in the programming department. It's a fun place to work.

ConsThe greatest drawback of working here is that the company is slow to promote. The company also strictly promotes from within.

Advice to Senior ManagementFuel innovation within the company through diversity.

ProsI have never had an issue taking vacation time, even if I notify my manager the morning of. Management is very accommodating when it comes to taking time off.

ConsMid level managers are hit or miss based on how much they care for their employees. Taking too much vacation time will count against you during your annual review.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your employees. Make A-O a place where people would want to continue to work at for a long time by investing in their future. Don't just hire consultants to fix the problem...train your employees and make it a place where they would want to stay and apply their knowledge.

Pros-Professional and friendly atmosphere, a feeling of pride going to work every morning.
-Employee Benefits, even in today's world it's quite generous.
-Professional development through education is available.
-"Fortune 500" company

Cons-Competitors offer better benefits including education reimbursement, adoption benefits, domestic partner benefits.
-LBGT community is not a protected class of worker.
-Opportunities for associates.... for those with 10+ yrs experience only. No fast track for proven talent.
-Innovation and ideas are not encouraged.
-Over qualified Gen Y employees in underpaying, entry level positions. (ie. MBAs, designations, experiences).

What if the 20-something year olds of our generation didn't graduate with buckets of student debt and in an economic depression? Would they put so much weight into a stable paycheck? What happens when Gen Y's concerns aren't adequately addressed? What will they do when the economy turns around? Will they stay and fight the brick walls of management? Or will they be herded to organizations that encourage their young spirit and energy and are truly offered opportunities for those who have earned and deserve it. Gen Y is the future of our economy. They'll be leading the economy for the next 50 years, who and what they bring with them will be up to them. Will Auto-Owners celebrate it's 150th birthday or will it only be a distant memory in 2066?

Advice to Senior ManagementYou hold rate committees to ensure our products can compete. Start having employee satisfaction committees. Shouldn't we be comparing our employee satisfaction to the industry too? Start asking questions. It could be scary to hear employees voices at first but I promise it'll get better. They only want to help keep the company safe, sound and secure for you, them, and the generations to come.

ProsGood work hours, 8:00AM to 4:30PM and they expect no overtime.
People generally leave you alone, you can work how you see fit.

Cons- IT department is terribly structured. Terrible management, they promote smart programmers instead of people who are good at actually managing other people or have good judgement.
- You do not get paid for overtime.
- Not much room for career growth, or even personal growth.
- Below average salary.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart paying way more attention to the people you are hiring, this company seems to want to hire anyone into IT that has a degree, regardless of what it is in. Pay more attention to the kinds of people that get promoted into management, based on their ability to MANAGE.

ProsBenefits, 7.5 hour work days, large desks, plenty of lighting

ConsThis is a great place for fresh out of college grads...you will learn to stay put at your desk, work for little money, and be treated like a child. The only way to get promoted is to kiss up to your supervisor, push paper, and expect small salary increases year to year. If you do this, you will climb that large ladder. Get your experience for 2 - 5 years, move on to bigger and better things - which is exactly what I have done.

Also, remember that quiet hour is from "8:00 to 9:30" and is strictly enforced - don't get caught talking during these times or something will be handed to you.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat employees like tax payers and maybe you will get better quality over more quantity.

ProsEveryone around me seemed to be competent at their job, and was generally friendly and accommodating. As an intern management could not have been better at providing feedback and congratulating me on a job well done.

ConsThe company seems to be very conservative and prudent to the extreme. This is sometimes frusterating especially working in the technology field, as things were slow to move and get done.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmphasize collaboration between departments and in a technology sense strive more to stay up to date and competitive.
