Current Employee – been working at AutoNation

ProsGenerally great group of IT people to work with who have solid skills and knowledge. Benefits are good, and management has shown its commitment to employees by paying bonuses missed in a down year in a following good year. Location is attractive, and the views from the top floors are a plus. There is no cafeteria on site however and the food nearby is generally expensive and subpar.

ConsRequirements gathering and sign-off process is very weak, leading to lots of confusion over the project life cycle. Also, business sponsors are usually not forced to stick to initial commitments. Staff is asked to work on many things at once, with load balance usually coming as an afterthought. Compensation is average, and hours can be excessive at times. Also, the org structure is so flat it leaves little room for management opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove compensation and/or career advancement opportunities so that top staff doesn't go elsewhere.

Irving, TX

Former Employee – worked at AutoNation full-time for more than a year

ProsOkay pay.....not much more I can say...

ConsI haven't worked for alot of companies, but this is by far the worst. When I started in Check Processing, there were people leaving on a monthly basis for a while.. soon it was a revolving door, people coming and leaving. During the interview they make the place out to be such a great company.. Forbes 500 doesn't mean crap for employees...

First let me say if you are looking to add any experience to your resume.... HERE IS NOT THE PLACE!

PTO- after 1 year you get 2 weeks. This included ANY time you take off other than holidays (if you have the luxury of getting them off .. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only guaranteed ones). There is no sick time, no vacation time, no personal time - - STRAIGHT TWO WEEKS PAID TIME OFF. SOunds like alot, until you come back from being sick for two days and you are FORCED to use your PTO.. Have a doctors appointment that had you out half of the day? Expect for 4 hours to be taken from your PTO. I think they do this, so when you finally want to take a weeks vacation in the middle of the year, you've used it all because they've MADE YOU use it for sick time and late days. Oh and you have to use 5 days the first 6 months of the year and 5 days the last six... some departments are leniant when it comes to usuage... but THEY WILL ALL MAKE YOU USE IT WHEN YOU DONT WANT TO!!!

At the SSC in Irving, it sometimes felt like a sweat shop. Some departments are overloaded with work, with minimal pay, while other departments make decent pay plus bonuses and work maybe two weeks out of a month.

If you are one to brown nose, you can get far at the SSC. Too bad your only choices are lead and supervisor. There is no room for growth and really nothing to add to your resume. Dont think you will go to the SSC and gain experience in anything but data entry. Thats all that place is.

For as big as this company is, you would think they would reward their employees for such hard work. THEY DONT. Health insurance premiums are high. IF you get a raise it's usually below a quarter. For lead positions, they expect alot more work for usually a dollar more.

Everything about this company revolves around numbers. How many checks can you cut, how many deals can you enter, how many vehicles can you stock. And if you cant do it, they will just replace you with the next. You are just a number there.

If you are in DESPERATE need for a job - - go for it... otherwise, go with your gut. They are desperate for people because people are constantly leaving them.

I wish i had gone with my gut and turned this place down like I did during my second interview... THEY CALLED ME BACK to offer me what i wanted - - not knowing they had a hard time keeping people.

STAY AWAY FROM HERE - -

Advice to Senior ManagementShow some appreciation for your employees... Maybe if you let them know you recognize their hard work. maybe you will have a better time of keeping them.

Also, pay isnt bad, nor is it great. But to be such a large company, the least you can offer are better benefits.

ProsGreat pay and opportunities for those without a college degree. Earn as much as you work. Time and hard work gives great results. Honda is a brand name you can trust and is easy to sale. You are provided with all the tools you can to help you succeed.

ConsIncredibly long hours. You have to work all weekends and holidays. Commission percentage is pretty low. A very competitive field. There are many sales quotas to meet, reviews to ace and customers to please. You will be calling and talking to a lot of people on top of test driving people all the time.

Advice to Senior ManagementUp the commission percentage. It may be better to institute a culture of togetherness instead of a culture of competition.

Seattle, WA

Former Employee – worked at AutoNation full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe best part of this job was the people I worked with at the dealership.

ConsRelationships with corporate management were very strained; we were constantly in the position of receiving top-down directives from Florida, that took no account of what our situation was in Seattle. The company is too large.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would say to improve regional aspect of operations management.

ProsThe commute was great. Other than that....

ConsIt is a giant corporation where you are spoon-fed their propaganda about how great they are. It's a ruse. An employee must work for 6 months to get their Health Insurance. After you get it, you are sadly disappointed. It is expensive, has a really high deductible, and it costs a fortune to add your family members.
The company doesn't respond to requests for office equipment for new employees. The process to hire takes weeks. However, when you start work, nothing is ready for your arrival! They make a great first impression! You will feel not welcome and confused.
I was hired to be a sales person and was to respond to Internet Leads. After a month and a half, I still had no phone, nor a computer. My fake managers, who were sales people who were just told they were managers..."Poof! NOW, you are a Manager, Dude!"...told me they made several requests. They did not.
They also told me they ordered my Business Cards. They never did.
Finally, I was criticized publicly, in a sales meeting, in front of my teammates and ridiculed as a "Squeaky Wheel"...because I wanted the tools to do my job. It had only been a month and a half with no phone or computer. I only got ONE Internet Lead in all thse weeks. I was starving!
An effective manager knows to "Praise in public and criticize in private"...but these guys have not even been to Amazon.com to peruse books on Management!!! I would have gladly loaned them my computer, but I never got one.
The really nice guy at the desk next to mine soon grew weary of me using his phone. I could only have access to it when he had his days off. I still didn't get incoming calls because I had to leap over to his phone and it was always too late. Someone, who HAD a phone, always beat me to the call.
When I "walked", they were astounded. "Let's go in and talk." They wanted me to go into a room with the door closed and speak with 2 of the "managers". No way. I offered to "talk" right there...but, then, they wouldn't be "in control"; on their closed-door turf. So, if I wouldn't go into that office, they would not speak with me.
I'm glad I remembered to go back in and get the office chair they had me buy. I was to be reimbursed. BIG SURPRISE!!! I was never reimbursed for the chair! It's mine now. GROAN
Do not work for this company. Their training programs lock-up and kick you out. You end up taking the same modules over and over, until you finally get them to complete. it does no good to point out all the "bugs". No one listens...and they already know that they can't change their system...let alone improve it. It's been broken so long and they have been brainwashed into believing they are working for the best company ever. The Kool-aid is very good. To me, t was YUCKY!!!

ProsGood training. Working at AutoNation allows you to interact with customers and coworkers of various backgrounds.

ConsYou are expected to work constantly, non-stop!
NO down time at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe realistic. Have more sympathy for your employees rather than just the bottom line. AND PAY YOUR EMPLOYEES A DECENT SALARY. Then you wouldn't have the tremendous turnover you have!

ProsLarge enough company that an employee that is lazy or inept can keep their job (pro for that employee).
Management can make a low 6 figure income, pretty easily.

ConsReturn for shareholders is more important than taking care of the customer and employee. Yes, a public corporation is created for shareholder value (by law)… but the only thing management truly cares about is moving the stock price to affect their options.

Corporate attitude- CYA, who you know is more important than production, etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementTruly focus on the customer and the employee and shareholder value (net profit) will take care of its self

ProsBig name is the only pro.

ConsEVERY department is constantly dealing with pay cuts. I have never seen anything like it. I put up with it for 5 years. Only hourly employees are safe. They only care about the stock. This includes sales parts AND service. All that plus a lot of training! YAY.
