I worked at AutoTrader full-time for more than a year

    Pros

management has open door policy. ceo interacts with staff on a regular basis. very laid back environment all together. autotrader really takes care of their employees. great perks and benefits.

    Cons

Management as a whole is good. I just happened to be assigned to a bad manager. Every one was scared of her because of how she did business in the department she was over. Nonetheless she no longer works there so I'm sure everyone that stayed during her tenure exclaimed Hallelujah when she made her exit!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

continue treating your employees the way you do!

I worked at AutoTrader full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The company OVERALL is an OK place to work - depending on who you are.

    Cons

Worse company "I" have ever worked for. I worked in the HR department and there is a lot of turnover and discord in the department starting with incompetence at the leadership level. AutoTrader started as a very small company and then grew over time. The individuals who started the organization as a vision from Cox all knew one another and everyone was promoted up the ranks extremely fast so there is an expectancy of promotion mentality. In addition, because of how the company came together and grew, it is EXTREMELY relationship based so everyone talks and things spread about your reputation (good or bad) sometimes to top leadership. There is disparity in promotion and in a particular department where most individuals are African American, they are barely represented in managment. If you're the type of person who likes to go into an organization and manage relationships with no particular skill set just to move up, this organization may be just the place for you...... It is the worse environment I ever worked in my entire professional career. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look uf DIVERSITY in the dictionary and stop giving it feel good lip service. Hire people who are competent and promote based on the skills they bring to the table.

I worked at AutoTrader full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

A company founded on "people roots" or the "engine" of their success
    Growth potential through networking
    Excellent salaries and benefits
Sr Staff has a good pulse on the market and impacts and plan accordingly
Gym on site, covered parking, family friendly, close to Perimeter area

    Cons

More hurdles and red tape during growth may hinder speed of success.
Work on more work/life balance options
Clarity of how to advance or grow career

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure talented workers who are not as conversational or as good at networking don't get overlooked for advancement or opportunities. I think you have lost a few good employees that way.

I have been working at AutoTrader full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I really am impressed by the above par professional training based on a person's needs. There are many ways to improve your professional self by going to ATC training or Cox-sponsored training. Also of note, they have leadership programs that are demanding, but well worth the time put into it.

    Cons

VERY immature leadership.. from a "Manager" title all the way up to the "VP"... you can see it in the finger pointing and CYA culture. The stress level sucks the life out of you - much of which is originated from leaderships' insecurity in the management decisions they make.... also seemingly based upon the heavy politics and whether or not you are a favorite of some VP or Director. OH! Speaking of Directors... I firmly believe that ATC does not need the amount of Directors that are walking around the building CONSTANTLY in meetings to avoid real work. I've never worked for a company where there are so so so many Directors with no direct reports. Just sayin....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut out the politics and wise up... maybe some of those acquisitions will actually work to the company's benefit.

I have been working at AutoTrader full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Fantastic benefit packages
    Work/life balance highly encouraged
    Lots of development training
Senior leadership focus on employee surveys and feedback

    Cons

Little direction by management which leads to poor execution and more chaos for employees mid-level and below
Little reliance on expertise and knowledge of lower level employees
No clear expectations and/or changing responsibilities due to constant operational change
Doing too much at once, no priorities, constant firedrills

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Prioritize what's important, stop everything else, focus on a few things at a time, take the time to plan and then change.

I worked at AutoTrader full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Benefits through Cox are good.
People are talented, but constrained by management
If you are in the right circle and enjoy drinking your career will go far

    Cons

    Very sterile enviroment.
Communicating with peers through email or IM only
No privacy during meetings - all glass meeting rooms
    Very top heavy organization
    In fighting amongst department heads
Departmental survey yields low rating results but issues are never addressed
Takes too long for management to make decisions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company values should also pertain to how you treat employees.

    I worked at AutoTrader

    Pros

AutoTrader is part of the COX family and has amazing benefits as a result. Pay is fair based on industry and geographic averages. They throw lots of parties, have plenty of prizes to give away, and are pretty flexible when it comes to work/life balance.

    Cons

They have meetings to plan meetings and Managers attend these meetings to appear as if they are hard at work. Systems & Reporting were (when I was there) a joke. To be fair, this was probably as a result of the accelerated growth of the company.

    I worked at AutoTrader

    Pros

Great benefits, great company, pleasant work environment, excellent work-life balance, great achievement reward, great location, available transportation from the train/bus station, beautiful building, some nice people

    Cons

Consultants are excluded of all-employees activities or giveaways or events or parties.
There is a lack of communication between managers and consultants.
Consultants have no access to the intranet so there is no way to find out about available internal position until there are posted on the internet

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consultants are a large part of the organization and an important part of it. Make them feel welcomed and considered so they can potentially join the company if you need them to. The giveaways and events or parties should be opened to consultants as they work for the company even if it is not on a permanent basis.
