I have been working at AutoTrader

    Pros

Great benefit package, one of the few companies that have a pension
    Fun, team-centered culture
Career growth is possible if you are aggressive enough

    Cons

    Low pay
    Lack of work/life balance
Tough to contribute outside of your core role, yet these are part of your performance evaluation
    Overly complex workflows
You are managed by people who are overly analytical and uncreative
Promotion is based on popularity versus competence
A culture that preaches individual contribution and creativity, but eschews it in actual practice

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tear down and rebuild the workflows so they make sense
Restore things that encourage work/life balance, like telecommuting and flexible scheduling
Management needs to have at least a rudimentary familiarity with the core work of the people who work for them

I worked at AutoTrader full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun environment and people who are very productive with minimal politics.
Great perks, good salary, bonus structure, excellent benefits, 401k match, pension plan, employee discounts, covered parking, cafeteria, onsite fitness center, community service opportunities
Interesting business - everyone can relate to automobiles in some way (performance, feel, look, value, image, financial, economy, fuel economy, etc.)

    Cons

There was a time period where there was a fear of layoffs. That was a hard time but it seems like they are well over the hump from the time when the industry took a hit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the original creative energy going as you grow and acquire other companies.

I have been working at AutoTrader full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

AutoTrader.com cares about it's employees. Insurance starts on the first day of employment. Paid time off for a new employee is good. A young and aggressive company. The new hires spend a total of four weeks in HQ training and getting to see the corporate office.

    Cons

There is a lot of material that goes into learning the job. There is a feeling of being overwhelmed. Training in the off weeks needs to be consistent/structured throughout the company so new employees don't feel like they are out on an island. Goals are very aggressive.

I worked at AutoTrader full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Intelligent, fun (yet professional HR), hard working HR department. Employees are really motivated and love working at ATC. The culture is really lively and embraces change and innovation.

    Cons

Executive leadership micro manages down to all levels and needs to improve delegation and empowerment. High turnover in the HR department due to poor leadership. Even the most motivate and intelligent HR members can not sustain the pace of change which often requires an average of 60-70 hours/week. Since I left there are only 2 of the original HR team members still on the team of 20

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower your directors and managers so you can focus on the strategic initiatives of the future.

I worked at AutoTrader full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A true market leader in the classifieds realm... amazing potential and scope to the auto industry. With change being the constant they learned from their mistakes early on and in the last few years rolled out tech products better and more efficiently. Sales through Service was a great mantra, and in my opinion should have stayed. Clients liked us better, and the environment was much more relaxed.

    Cons

VERY... I repeat... VERY POOR middle level management. No consistency in such across the country, most of the manager's that I worked for had their own agenda in mind, NOT the client or ATC. The corporate america mentality killed the amazing workplace environment that the company had for many years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Field reps are your true front line... not only as the revenue generators, but also your liaisons to the clients... consider this when training middle level management (RSD/DSM). 90% of the reps that I met in my time there had what it takes to make your company flourish, but were being restricted by "management" in one way or another.
